It’s not every day you get to have lunch with Miss America.
But I did this week, with my all-time favorite Miss America Deidre Downs.
A lot in her life has changed, but one thing remains constant, and that is her commitment to curing childhood cancer.
This is my friend and neighbor Margaret Ann Clark. She was just 6 old when I did a story about a block party her parents had to raise awareness about childhood cancer.
That day a lot of folks came by to play and eat hot dogs, and more importantly to sign up for a new specialty car tag called “Curing Childhood Cancer.”
I met Dan Sims that day. Dan had just lost his daughter to cancer and he was on a mission to get a thousand people signed up for the Curing Childhood Cancer tag. A young college girl named Deidre Downs had come up with the tag idea. None of us had heard of her.
That changed quickly. Deidre became Miss Alabama, and then Miss America. Her platform was her passion for curing childhood cancer.
I met with Dan Sims and Deidre this week. Recently, the Curing Childhood Cancer tag went by the million dollar mark for cancer research, money that stays here in Alabama.
“We’re so excited that we’ve reached the million dollar mark in the curing childhood cancer tags,” Deidre said. “The only thing that we can say is please continue that, if you don’t have a tag please be part of this effort because it is raising money that is staying here in Alabama at UAB and Children’s Hospital helping to find a cure for childhood cancer.“
“We’re so proud of the doctors and staff and everyone who helps our children here and we want to support ‘em, and this tag goes a long way to raise the money it’s gonna take to find a cure,“ Sims said.
A lot has changed since that block party back in 2004. Margaret Ann Clark is a happy and healthy 5th-grader. Deidre Downs has been busy too.
“Well, since I was Miss America and came back to Alabama, I started med school at UAB.” Downs said. “I’m now in my 4th year, so will graduate next May and go on to pursue a residency in ob/gyn, that’s the specialty I’m going in to.“
She went and got married too.
“I’m also happy to say that my husband and I are expecting a new baby in January, so we’re very excited about that,” Deidre said. “So a lot of changes in my life since Miss America, but it’s very exciting.“
Thanks to the thousands of you who have paid the extra $50 to display the Curing Childhood Cancer tag. Dan Sims hopes many more of you will get on board.
“Start thinkin’ about the Curing Childhood Cancer tag and the children it helps and I guarantee you’ll want one, and if you know a child that has been diagnosed with cancer and you know their family, do it to support them,” Sims said.

In Canada, full-time jobs are common. However, a growing number of people have part-time or short-term jobs.Women make up a large portion of the work force and many have important, senior positions.Canadians may change jobs and careers several times. This is often a personal choice.Sometimes people must change jobs because the economy changes. For these, and other reasons, getting a job is not easy. Many people are looking for work.Newcomers to Canada rarely enter the job market quickly and often must start with jobs below the skill level they worked at in their home country. Once they have Canadian job experience and their ability in English or French improves, so do their job prospects.for more detail visit: http://settlement_in_canada.sitesled.com/finjobc5.htm

Sweetheart, Sweet Corn...Sweet Life!
It's officially here and I cannot believe it. I feel like it was just yesterday that we were at Miss Kansas and now I find myself in the small town of Hoopeston, IL for the National Sweetheart Pageant! Hoopeston (pronounced Hup-ston, yes we asked) has about 6,000 people, I think that's even smaller than Pratt. We are in for an excellent week!
For those that don't know, the National Sweetheart Pageant is a pageant that has been around for 66 years. This pageant is for all the 1st RU's of the state Miss America pageants. So basically this is like a mini Miss America. This year we have a record 41 girls competing! The board of directors is just thrilled and I think we all are too. Out of the 41 girls I am #40! I am in Group D and will be doing my interview Thursday evening, talent Friday night, and swimsuit and evening wear Saturday night. Sunday is the final show, where the competition will be cut from 41 amazing women to 10. Wish me luck! Now, onto the fun stuff...
Today started off with at 5am wake up call and an early flight from Wichita to Chicago. When I got to Chicago I had just enough time to grab breakfast, a latte, and head to the terminal. At the terminal I met my first Sweetheart friend, Miss Missouri, Kari! It was nice to finally get to meet someone. After a short 20 minute flight from Chicago to Indianapolis, Kari and I found another friend on our flight, Miss North Dakota, Jaci. So the three of us got to chatting and "thought" we arrived early so we decided to grab lunch because we were pretty hungry. Well, we kind of forgot to go get our luggage first so as we are sitting there waiting on our food when Kari realized what we had, or hadn't done. We all started cracking up with laughter realizing we forgot to go get one of the most important items for the week, LUGGAGE! No, nothing was lost and we all arrived with every piece so not to worry. It was just a dumb moment for us and we thought it was good entertainment. So after finally getting our luggage we went back up to a waiting area where we met a majority of the Sweetheart contestants. Let me tell you, these girls are going to be a hoot! All of them were so nice and it was cool to see where everyone was from and learn a little bit about them. I'm sure as the week goes on we will learn a lot more.
Finally after a 2 hour bus ride from Indianapolis, we arrived in Hoopeston where we were taken to the country club for dinner. I've never seen so many girls rush to a food line before in my life; that was when I knew I fit in. :) After dinner we had a meeting with some of the board to review our week's events and then we got our sashes!! This was probably the best part of the day. I am just so thrilled to be able to represent my home state, and for one week, I get to be Miss Kansas. (Becki I hope you don't mind). I'm so excited for this journey to start and I cannot wait to see where this week goes.
After our meeting, my roommates, Jenna (CA), Kristina (FL), Sarina (NM), and myself made a run to CVS with our hostess Lisa before heading "home." When we got to the house I was blown away when I walked in; this place is gorgeous!! To set the stage for you it is a lovely ranch style home with about 4,000 sq ft. Wood floors, gorgeous deep red kitchen, a big master bedroom, a HUGE basement living room, the most adorable pink 4yr old's room and my room. Now my room is great because it is my little host brother's room, he's 7. His room is white and blue striped walls and....CONSTRUCTION TRUCKS on the wall. Now doesn't that just fit!?! It's adorable. I will be getting pictures and updating you all after tomorrow's activities.
Tomorrow we get to go on a few tours, meet some community members, and rehearse. I wouldn't be surprised if we get to eat some corn too! Good thing that's one of my favorite vegetables! Overall, today was exhausting and it's only the beginning but I am excited and ready for tomorrow and all it has to offer. Be on the look out for pictures and thank you to those who have and are supporting me. I wouldn't be where I am today without the love from my family, my friends, and of course my crazy pageant family. I love you all very much and I hope to make you all proud. Kansas could use a national title...hey why not two? Right Becki?! ;)
Until tomorrow, I wish you all the best!
-Alex

That's The Way We Take It To The House...
Frankfort witnessed its very own version of the parting of the red sea today as mothers, teachers, and advocates for autism flooded the capital(all wearing red). Our very own versions of Moses, struggling mothers simply trying to get their tired voices heard, came forward once again to plead with close to thirty of our house and senate members to pass an Autism Insurance Reform Bill. This bill, that many states have already passed, will help cover the outrageous costs it takes to treat this disease(which, contrary to popular belief, is treatable...I've seen it). Since my platform is autism awareness(because of my three autistic first cousins and my families struggle with autism) I joined this movement long ago. However, it is days like today that remind yet again of the joy of helping others and of the opportunity and responsibility I have to serve this year. More to come on that. Photo above of myself along with testimony leaders Lorri Unumb(with Autism Speaks), Anne Gregory, and others devoted to this cause.
Last night was my final princess night and my last stand against the battle not to eat the new chick-fil-a peach milkshake. I lost that battle last night. Sorry dad.
And I'll leave you with my second grade yearbook photo...as a snapshot of proof that natural beauty so does not exist and that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. See ya.
P.S. Happy Birthday Richie Farmer...

ABOUT ME
MALLORY ERVIN
When they call your name you don't believe it...it's a feeling I don't think I'll feel again. It's hard to describe what it feels like to be in the moment where your dream comes true. It's kind of like falling, kind of like floating, kind of like drinking six red bulls in a row and trying to sit still. It's like a ton bricks hitting you then bursting into glitter, or a moon-bounce on a trampoline. I try and try to describe it, how fulfilling it is when all those little dirt roads finally reach a destination...how fulfilling it is to have the opportunity to give and give and give every single day...but it's just so hard. So here is my attempt. I would love for you to come with me through my dream this year...and if you want to, I would love for you to try and weed through my banter to figure out what it is that I'm feeling...because I want you to feel it too.

Hulk Hogan Ham Holder
I tell people how strong I am all the time, but it wasn't until I had to hold a 6,000 pound ham (that they somehow said weighed 16 pounds) for a good 15 minutes, running back and forth from bidder to bidder pleading my case of why they should pay thousands of dollars for a country ham that I proved my strength. And despite my inability to move the next morning, it was well worth it. The ham went for triple what it has ever sold for before...a new record of $1.3 MILLION DOLLARS. Intense. All the money raised went to charity. Oh yeah, this was Thursday at the state fair during the annual Farm Bureau Country Ham Breakfast. Onlookers waiting for me to fall on my face included Senator Mitch McConnell, Governor Steve Beshear, my best friend Commissioner Richie Farmer, Lt Gov Mongiardo, Trey Grayson, Jack Conway, mayors, senators, house members, etc, and my favorite Miss America, Heather French Henry, her husband Steve, and their spitfire little girls. I was so proud to be a part of this spectacle as I can officially add both 'ham displayer' and 'professional briber' to my resume, but most importantly to have been a part of raising over a million dollars for charities in our state. Recession Schmesshion...in Kentucky we know when to spend money...when it's for other people.
Governor Beshear finally helped me hold the ham.
I wrapped up my week at the state fair wondering just why they call it 'the fair'...it's so not fair...at least not for me. Every single food that I know and love is not only extremely accessible, but displayed in rows of flashing lights. There was no way not to give in...it was the last time though...I swear. Here are some 'not so fair' photos from Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
Presenting an award at the World Horse Show.
Oh, and my family came!...if you are a reader who doesn't know me as well, let me just say that I am who I am because of nothing more than my family. They have been in the front row supporting me ever since I was this little three year old girl in blue...who lied about being four because I just couldn't wait to be in dance class and be onstage.
P.S...Happy Late Birthday to my Best Bro Scottie Coleman. I miss her.
P.S.S...Go Dr. Wakefield!!

MOUNT PLEASANT - She was born in Germany, but don't worry - 14-year-old Jeanette Morelan can still become president.
Morelan, a straight-A student and soon-to-be sophomore at The Prairie School, already has a platform - "The Power of ONE" - and experience knocking on doors for John Dickert's mayoral election campaign. And her dad was at a military base when she was born, so she is eligible.
Saturday, Morelan won her first national honor to add to the commander-in-chief credentials: Miss America's Outstanding Teen 2010. The Mount Pleasant resident beat 51 competitors at the pageant in Orlando, Fla. to become "the little sister to Miss America" and Wisconsin's first national Miss America winner since the early '70s.
She flies home with a $30,000 scholarship to Auburn University, as well as $10,000 in Regalia and La Casa Hermosa apparel, she said. She'll also be able to travel around the country for speaking engagements and to promote the organizations she volunteers for: Children's Miracle Network, DARE and Miss America's Outstanding Teen.
"I really can't tell you why I won," Morelan says, aside from her faith in and dependence on Jesus Christ. But Morelan's talents have been a topic of discussion in Miss Wisconsin pageant circles since she arrived on the scene, said Debra Morrall, co-director of the Miss Racine pageant and judge of local pageants.
Morelan showed "phenomenal" public speaking ability when addressing the audience at the Miss Wisconsin pageant in June, Morrall said.
One evening at the event in Oshkosh, Morelan told the crowd that if each audience member gave a dollar to the Children's Miracle Network, they'd make a difference collectively, Morrall said. "She stood out the next night with a fishbowl," collecting donations, Morrall said.
"You would never guess that she was 14 years old," said Kristina Smaby of Holmen, this year's Miss Wisconsin winner. Smaby remembers Morelan making a strong impression on their first appearance together, at a Cycling Grand Prix event in Fond du Lac in which they had a milk-chugging contest. "She won, of course."
Morelan won $1,000 as Miss Wisconsin Junior Pre-Teen 2004, in the age 7-9 division. In fifth grade she started a program called Reading is Fun, in which she read to kindergartners.
She has harbored presidential ambitions since the first grade, when she was five years old - she skipped kindergarten. When George Bush was named president in 2000, she wrote him a letter inviting him over for a traditional Trinidadian dinner. Her mother Helen is from the Caribbean island.
"You wanna tell her, you sure you don't wanna be a doctor?" Helen says. "But she just never changes her mind."
Morelan's got plans for the 20-plus years until she's eligible to become leader of the free world. Like go to Harvard.
"You're never too young to dream," she says.

| Subject: The Note |
Author: good song! [Edit]
|
Date Posted: Saturday, September 05, 01:23:33pm
Earlier this year, someone asked me about the song that was sung by Miss Texas Sweetheart the year she was first runner-up to Leanza at National Sweetheart. It's an easy song that practically anyone can sing 'cause it goes up and down the scale, yet it's still effective. Good song for a contestant who is more of a SS girl than a T girl. I promised to research it, and finally found it. It's called The Note, Doug Supernaw sang it, sounds like a Conway Twitty song, too. Lyrics: The note was short, but Lord so strong
It simply said, "I can`t go on
And live a lie with someone I don`t love"
She couldn`t tell me face to face
Oh but how my world was changed
By the hand that held the pen
That wrote the words, that broke the heart
Of the one, the one that really loves her
My tears fell down, like falling rain
But they can`t wash away the pain
How will I go to sleep without her in my arms
She never meant to break my heart
But how my world was torn apart
By the hand that held the pen
That wrote the words, that broke the heart
Of this one, the only one that really loves her
With one stroke of the pen she wrote off all my dreams
Erasing all the plans we made together
I am the one that is to blame
Oh, but how my world was changed
By the hand that held the pen
That wrote the words, that broke the heart
Oh the one, the only one that really loves her

In April of 2009, best friends Marcus Collins, JC Fisher, and John Hagen learned that "America's Got Talent" was coming to Texas for auditions. Though they had moved away from each other because of family obligations, they thought coming out to audition would be the opportunity of a lifetime. With various backgrounds in the performing arts, they decided to combine their individual talents and become The Texas Tenors. Mixing country and classical music with their own Texas Tenor flavor, they auditioned with aspirations of winning over the judges and sharing their fresh new act with all of America. JC, a family man with his Texan wife and two sons, currently lives in Kansas. Born and raised on a cattle ranch, he relies on his family's strong foundation of hard work and faith to guide his everyday life. John, considered the rock of the group, brings a wealth of classical music training along with his baritone voice. He divides his time in Texas performing, spending time with family, and running a small art gallery in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Marcus adds a contemporary flair to the group with his unique pop voice and boyish charm. Marcus splits his time between Houston and Sun Valley, California, to be close to his mother and grandparents on the West Coast. As the name of the group suggests, performing together on America's Got Talent affords them the chance to do what they love, and represent their deep-rooted love for the Lone Star State.
J.C. Fisher, host and performer at the 2009 Miss Kansas Pageant, husband of Miss Kansas 1998 Jennifer Vannatta and tenor par excellence. Pageant-goers may remember a younger J.C. dropping to one knee and proposing on stage to Vannatta at the end of her year of service to the Miss Kansas Organization. Fisher recently joined forces with Marcus Collins and John Hagen to audition for America’s Got Talent as The Texas Tenors, a group described as having country roots and a classical sound they claim as influences Don Williams, George Jones, Luciano Pavarotti and Enrico Caruso while singing everything from “Deep in the Heart of Texas” and “Unchained Melody” to “Nessun Dorma.”
THE GOOD NEWS: The Texas Tenors did indeed make the Top 20 and are on their way to winning it all, but they still need our support! When the semifinals & finale are aired in September we must all tune in to NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” at 8pm CDT on Tuesdays then follow the instructions that will be given on the screen the night The Texas Tenors perform which basically will be: you may call AND e-mail AND text 10 times per each option from as many lines & accounts available to you during the voting window!

| Subject: Sweetheart "wildcard" - interesting- from the other board- what do you guys think?? |
Author: yes ma'am [Edit]
|
Date Posted: Saturday, September 05, 01:17:52pm
Hello MAO fans! I am as excited for the upcoming Sweetheart crowning as the rest of you are. My state has had the good fortune of sending several RUs to Hoopeston in recent years, and every one of those young ladies had nothing but accolades to describe their experience in sweet corn country! They have attested that it is a great opportunity to gain insight into what a national competition feels like.
As I review this year's Sweetheart delegates, I am reminded that many of these 1st RUs are young women who have competed for their respective coveted state titles for years. Some get so painfully close to that goal- 1st RU- and unfortunately age out, never having had the chance to get to Miss America. Some of these young women do go to Sweetheart as a last hurrah.
I am curious how pageant fans would feel about the Sweetheart national winner being given a "wildcard spot" at the Miss America pageant. I realize this is a highly controversial concept and I personally do not endorse or reject the idea. Rather, I can foresee both sides of the argument.
Right off the bat I would think people would take issue with it for a couple reasons:
1) she never actually won a state title, so if she did by some chance win Miss America some would cry foul
2) it wouldn't be fair to the other actual Miss States who have sacrificed jobs/school/personal lives, etc, to honor the commitment of being Miss State if someone else without any contractual obligations could just reap the same benefits that come with being a Miss State (namely, the privilege of competing at Miss A)
3) it would probably make for an uncomfortable situation between her and her actual Miss State winner at Miss America- especially if the Sweetheart winner placed at Miss A and the Miss State didn't!
Anyways, just curious what your thoughts are- do you vote yes, no, or are you undecided? Are you open to the idea? Vehemently against it? Just looking to start some interesting conversations and civil debates. Thanks!

I've been enthralled with pagents as long as I could remember and as a native of Kentucky, (I've lived in Wintersett for the past 15 years) I enjoy coming to these boards to catch up with the Pagent system. What I find is the most hateful, rude, and just plain wrong potrayal of the Miss Kentucky system. Most of the people on here come on here for one reason and one reason only: to bash every single girl competing in the Orginazation. It's just like High School. What really upsets me is that most of the people that do this are over-40 Woman who are angry just because their Precious daughter DIDN'T win a prelim. This isn't High School yet I see the same immature crap that I saw in High School. If you want to bash one of these girls, Do it at home and over the phone with your other Friends and not on these message boards. None of you OBVIOUSLY care about the feeling of tons of people that read these Message boards. I don't think any of you would be happy if this was said about your daughter. So shut up, grow up, and most importantly stop posting on here unless you can say something nice about one of the Contestants.
Thank You :)
