Subject: Codes of Personal Conduct....

Nice is as Nice does

Codes of personal conduct were once what Americans were all about. The deliberate refusal of solid citizens to do things that would tarnish their reputation was the norm. We now have the Girls Gone Wild culture not only competing for but at times winning prelims and state contests in the Miss A. system.

In my opinion, contestants who attend drag shows, appear drunk in public or (getting drunk is unhealthy to say the least) and participating in or doing other loud, promiscous, detestable and uninteresting activities should be disallowed from any competition with the Miss America system.

That's not likely to happen in the near future though. The fox is in charge of the henhouse. The system that was in place before to insure the codes of personal conduct were adhered to simply no longer exists. Now you have individuals involved in the organizations themselves who display unprofessional behavior so what are these young women to think? Did anyone ever think it would be smart to tell Mallory - don't attend drag queen shows when you're supposed to uphold a standard? Of course not because the ones encouraging participation in this type of "entertainment" are involved with the organization itself!!!!!

It's hard to watch the culture we live in at work and not feel revolted.

I have watched many, many state and local pageants over the years and I honestly do not believe this one was rigged by the board or the judges. Three of the judges were old school and they tend to go for "pageant patties", and Mallory became the Kristi Glakas of Kentucky, that was just what those three judges wanted. Janelle was the opposite, a real woman. If you honestly watched the top 10 without being biased for a contestant, Janelle should have had it hands down. She had the best swimsuit presentation, I put Mallory at 5th is ss, untoned butt and sucked in way too hard and too bouncy on her walk. In talent I had Kelli Casey 1st with Mallory and Janelle 2nd. Casey is technically strong, Mallory and Janelle were both performance strong and honestly I have never been a strong love of dance but Janelle performed the h*ll out of that routine. In evening gown I had Janelle 1st (pure elegance in her presentation and perfect fit)Casey 2nd and Mallory way down the road. The fit was not flattering and the color did not stand out with her hair and skin. In OSQ I had Holly and Janelle at 1st, they were the ONLY intelligent honest answers that didn't sound prerehearsed or about me, me, me. So based on that Janelle should be wearing the crown.
BUT I knew, and so did everyone around me, on Friday night that the judges would pick Mallory. She was in full "pageant" mode and that's okay. That's what it took for her to win the crown and that's okay, it's a competition and girls do what they feel is right to win the crown and if the judges like what you're doing then it's your lucky day.

Miss Kentucky is over and done. Whether or not we agree or disagree with the outcome of the pageant, it is finished. I think it would be safe to say that every contestant that goes to Miss Kentucky really wants to win. Some will and some won't. As was said by the emcee (I think it was Chera Lynn), all young women who have graced the stage of Miss Kentucky is what this program is about. I want to applaud each and every one of you that have competed in every local throughout the state. Although you may never wear the crown of Miss Kentucky, you have definitely made a difference in our communities and certainly a difference in this observers life. Hats off to you all.

Sarah had every right to leave the pageant. She was screwed and you know it.

1.) Whether you want to except it or not, she was a solid contestant. Her history: MKOT, Top 10 two years, then 2nd runner up in a very strong year.

2.) Her stage performance was stellar. She was more prepared this year than she had ever been.
a.) swimsuit --- one of the best in the pageant. She looked awesome people. Everything was toned and she presented it well.
b.) On stage question -- had great presence and gave an intelligent answer... more than we can say about our winners response in both of her answers.
c.) Talent -- this was a great song and she did really well with it. I know many that were sitting around me were very moved by it and thought it was a close race between she and mallory and kelly casey. Couldn't have lost it there... she was on the strongest talent night and talent was 35%.
d.) evening gown -- beautiful. perfect color and she modeled it well. The winners gown was hideous.

3.) That leaves us to interview. Grant it, we do not see this phase of compeition... but I'm sorry. I've interviewed Sarah before. Her resume is amazing and she speaks well in general. Even if it was her worst interview she had to be in the top half. Also its 25%... she was definitely in the top ten for the other 75% and possible the top three.

4.) An for those people who said she didn't shine... she was the only one who could dance in the opening number. She looked awesome and I know that many said that they enjoyed watching her.

So my conclusion is--- she got screwed by the judges. I can't believe you people cannot see it. You should be giving her so much support right now. She was kept from competing on Saturday for some reason, and I'm not sure why.

This is not her mother or director, but someone who has watched Sarah grow in this organization and thinks its simply unfair what it has done to her. And also what you ppl are saying about her. I'm sure it was the shock of her life to not make the top ten after such an amazing performance in the preliminaries and I think she deserved to be ill afterwards and not come back. Give her a break. The judges should be ashamed of THEIR CHILDISH behavior.

Ihad to get the cake out of the oven and couldn't finish the previous post. I read the boards to read the opinions of others because it's an opinion board but please dear people stop with the bad language and tearing the contestants apart. We're all human and we all do things we at one time or another that we wish we hadn't done but it's easier to exhibit absolutely terrible behavior in today's world and not even get so much as a frown.

It doesn't mean that right and wrong have changed becuase they haven't, people are allowing themselves to be influenced by a celebrity culture that shows the world nothing but dispicable, indecent, and immoral behavior.

The reason Emily Cox was not talked about is because she conducted herself in a responsible and ladylike manner. She lived the role of Miss Kentucy and was a star for the Miss Kentucky Organizatioin.

Do a lot of young women today even know what it means to be a lady??
Do older women even remember for that matter because there are times when I realy doubt it? Have we gotten to the point where absolutely anything goes and where no one has a sense of responsibility to set an example for children???? I certainly hope not.

The behavior of certain people on this board has been dispicable. You can not like someone and express yourself but the degree to which former Miss Kentucky's and contestants have been disparaged, it's ridiculous and inexcusable behavior and it needs to stop. You can't do what you're doing and like yourself very much. It indicates a deep seated anger toward either the MKO, one's self, or an individual and that can lead to harming someone irreparably.

I guess this could go for the fat formers as well...

I just love to hear a fat woman walk around the MK stage in flip-flops. Each time she plants a foot it sounds like a vertical saw-log dropped on a basketball floor. Then that flip-flop sounds like your mama's palm smacking your little brother's cheek after he lets the f-word slip when it hits her fat heel. Stomp-slap, stomp-slap, stomp-slap. Yeah, boy.

Why are you on a personal vendetta against so many of these women? It is what it is and all that it is is a PAGEANT. Mallory's win doesn't make the world a better or worse place. For those of you who think pageants are the most important thing in life...and some of you do whether you'd actually say that...let me set the record straight.

Mallory is a SWEETHEART. All this business about being mean to other girl...well I just find it laughable. She won Miss Congeniality two years...did she suddenly decide to be mean? I doubt it. I bet all you who post horrible comments about her have never had longer than a moment w. her. She is a very kind soul.

Kaitlyn Postel is not the devil incarnate as some of you would lead us to believe. So what if you don't agree w/ her win...it was TWO years ago and I'm sure she did a great job as Miss Kentucky. She looks beautiful now. NOT fat. I can't believe you guys would hide behind you anonymous post and say such evil evil evil things about ANYONE!

Sarah didn't come back out on stage...end of story! What you think about it or how someone else may have handled it doesn't matter. Let it go. She's not going to compete next year.

Leave these three poor girls alone. Let Sarah and Postel get on w/ their lives and let's all support our new queen.

My last year competing was 2006, I've tried many approaches to the pageant food situation- not caring and eating everything (felt guilty, bloated), try not to eat anything (cranky, unhappy, low energy), and then finally last year I figured it out- had tons of energy, looked awesome in swimsuit, and was able to eat at the sponsors place and be the happy camper Miss State needs to be.

My tips...

1. I'm not sure what your eating plan is now, but my pre-pageant diet consisted of 3 300-350 calorie meals and 2 150 calorie snacks. For most people (depends on metabolism) you will lose 1 lb. a week eating this way (1250 calories a day) more when you factor in calories burned working out. 1750 calories is what most women need to eat to maintain their weight. You will definitely be burning calories during rehearsal and being on your feet and you DO NOT WANT to lose weight at the pageant. Your clothes have been fitted to your body, now is not the time to lose more weight through diet. You'll probably lose a little from working out. So I'd suggest aiming for 1500-1800 calories a day, eating lots of small frequent meals, and very low sodium.

2. Drink lots and lots of water- I know its a pain to have to go to the bathroom during rehearsal but this well keep you hydrated (good for singers voices, and dancers too) and full, and flush away any excess salt you eat from sponsors. Also try green tea (lipton has these very tasty green tea packets for bottled water, my favorite is the cherry blossom and mango mandarin) which has a mild diuretic effect and something called "throat coat tea" its an herbal tea with licorice root in it thats very soothing for singers. I would stay away from sodas- I'm not sure if the it causes cellulite thing is true- but why risk it... its easier to drink from bottled water and less sticky if it spills. Coffee is sort of ok- a diuretic as well, but beware of caffeine that spikes you and then crashes you, it also stains your teeth- which you have so painstakingly whitened to compete. Iced tea is fine, mild diuretic from caffeine, again beware over using caffeine- you don't want to have a post coffee crash during your interview. Try "Emer'gen-C" packets, their low cal or no-cal, add a nice flavor to your water and give you a boost of energy from vitamins. I don't like energy drinks like red-bull- too much risk for a post-sugar caffeine crash.

3. Implementing diuretic foods- 3-4 weeks prior to the pageant cut out these foods: asparagus, melon, pineapple, coffee, tea (any caffeine), artichoke, celery, parsley, and watercress. These are diuretics and if you reintroduce them to your diet about 3-4 days before you leave for you pageant your body will respond to them more strongly than had you been eating them along and you will lose a lot of water weight- water weight you didnt know you had, this will really make your muscles pop and your skin glow. Pretty, pretty. Eat these foods during the pageant (whether they're provided by the pageant or you can bring them) to counteract the high sodium sponsor food and to continue to flush water from your body. But don't overdo caffeine.

4. Eat high fiber. You should be doing this now too. Look at the fiber content on cereals and other bread products, the higher the better. This may sound gross but you need to flush out impurities several times a day- a la #2. This balances your gastro-whatever (I was an english major, who am I kidding) and it is 10x more filling than low fiber foods. Try Fiber One cereals, they have about 14 grams of fiber per serving. They make a great honey cluster one and a raisin one too in addition to their traditional one. Aim for 25 grams of fiber a day. Try it, fiber may sound uncool if you're in your 20's (I had a guy ask me once why on earth I only had fiber ceral with people in their 60's on the box) but you can eat it and be full for about 2 hrs. longer (I've found) than a lower fiber food. "Thomas" brand makes very good lite bagels and light english muffins that are low calorie and high fiber. So does "La Tortilla" best whole wheat low cal, hi fiber tortilla product I've ever tried. "Flatout bread" makes a delicious pizza crust and wrap that is very high fiber low calorie, but I would say only eat this pre-pageant and not while you're there because its higher in sodium.

5. Talk to girls (or your director or email the room hostess- depends on your state) who have been their before and ask what they are usually offered to eat and plan ahead.
BREAKFAST
At my state breakfasts were usually brought to us where all the contestants were staying (sonic, mcdonalds, dairy queen breakfast sandwichs and tacos) which usally looked delicious but has way too much salt and will leave you feeling heavy and not energized. If they have fruit, eat that (particularly any melon or pineapple) because it has good carbs which will give you energy. Also bring some of the fiber products I talked about earlier, either a high fiber cereal, or a high fiber bagel or english muffin. You can use peanut butter (they always had this around and skim milk at my pageant) on these to get some fat- which you do actually need for energy and to keep full. We usually weren't around sponsors at breakfast so its ok to not eat the bacon-cheese-1500 mg sodium thing they bring you, just eat your food politely and don't whine to the other girls about how you can't eat it- this will not make you friends. Eat your food and feel full and be friendly and they will just admire your discipline and wonder why you have so much energy during rehersal while their energy is dropping.
REHEARSAL
Bring snacks that aren't messy and can be toted around in your rehearsal bag- dried fruit, nuts (unsalted), Lara bars (not luna- those are good too, but "Lara" they're only made with 3-4 ingredients, like dates, coconut, and almonds- no fake stuff just whole food, this keeps you full much longer than processed food, dont be tricked into eating protein bars just because they sound healthy- if they have them great eat them, but don't buy them just because they have protein- you wont build much muscle in a week) and lots and lots of water.
LUNCH/DINNER
I suspect this will be a sponsored meal. This is when it gets tricky. Usually its some sort of protein, vegatables, and bread. If its protein (chicken, steak, fish) aim for 3-4 oz (about the size of your palm I think). If it tastes super salty or is drowned in butter or has a skin, discreetly scrape that off, or eat a smaller portion. Fill up on veggies and fruit. Hopefully they won't have drowned them in butter or marshmellow fluff- if they have take a small portion. Pasta- Eat about a cup (imagine holding a tennis ball in your hand, around that)Rice- about 1/2 cup. Bread- 1 pc. Salads- fill up on these if the other options arent as great, dont worry about the dressing, most dressings have about the same calories as regualar oil and vinegar. Aim for 1 standard dressing dipper size (if they have it for you) or around 2 normal spoons of dressing. If they have a low fat dressing go for it and allow yourself a little extra fat in your salad- cheese, nuts, olives. Allow yourself 1-2 fats in your salad, either the dressing alone or that + either cheese, nuts or olives, but not all of the fats together. If the salad is pre dressed and has a lot of dressing, eat a smaller portion. Composed salads- mayo- based chicken salad, tuna salad, aim for a tennis ball size and eat some sort of carb in addition- a bread or something. Dessert- use your judgement, pudding, jello, sorbet yes. Something super sugary (pie cake pastries etc) maybe- don't deny yourself if you really want it, just take a small portion, the size of a deck of cards. If it doesn't look that amazing and you're not hungry, politely skip it.
NIGHT TIME
I have to have something sweet at night or I'm moody- I've accepted that about myself. I love these things called "no pudge fudge brownies" I made them ahead of time and brought them with me. Or bring whatever your favorite candy is and only have 150 calories worth.

6. My suggestions will be helpful, but if you could meet with a real nutritionist (at your gym probably) that would be even better. S/he can come up with a calorie plan and give you better descriptions of portion sizes and salt levels than I can. Also check out the web for fast food calories- if you have a choice you can eat healthy anywhere, below are healthy options I like (around 300-400 kcal)
TACO BELL- 2 crunch tacos OR 1 bean and cheese burrito
McD's- Southwest grilled chicken salad w/ southwest dressing OR oriental grilled chicken salad w/ gingery something dressing OR at night I love their vanilla cone- its huge and only 150 calories
Smoothie King- any of the slim and trim smoothies are around 200-300 ish, orange vanilla is only 199 and tastes like a dreamsicle
JACK in the BOX- southwest chicken fajita pita with salsa
Subway- any of the subs with 6 grams of fat or less, I usually skip cheese but it won't hurt you
Quiznos- Raspbery chipotle turkey sandwich (small size) or flatbread
Wendys- a jr. size choc frosty is only 160 calories

Anyway... ask ahead which fast food places are sponsors and then you can go online and check calorie counts and sodium

Good luck!
