Fieger sues FEC over documents
Attorney alleges agency is withholding papers linking White House to failed probe of law firm, himself.

DETROIT -- Southfield attorney Geoffrey Fieger sued the Federal Election Commission on Thursday, alleging the agency is withholding documents he believes will show White House involvement in a campaign finance investigation of himself and his law firm.
Fieger sued in federal court in Detroit under the Freedom of Information Act, alleging the FEC has failed to provide records he sought in a written request filed under the public records law on July 3.
Fieger, who was acquitted of felony campaign finance charges in June after a jury trial, requested all written communications between the White House and the FEC related to his case, as well as all written communications, including e-mail, between the Justice Department and the FEC.
"Mr. Fieger has accused the Bush Justice Department of conspiring with the Federal Election Commission to politicize the enforcement of federal campaign finance laws," said the complaint, filed on Fieger's behalf by Michael Dezsi, a lawyer at the Fieger firm.
Mary Brandenberger, a spokeswoman for the FEC in Washington, D.C., declined comment. "We cannot discuss ongoing litigation," she said.
In 2007, a federal grand jury indicted Fieger and law partner Ven Johnson on conspiracy and illegal campaign donation charges related to more than $100,000 they raised for the 2004 presidential campaign of Democrat John Edwards. Fieger was accused of illegally reimbursing donations made by his employees, their relatives and law firm vendors.
The court rejected arguments from Fieger, a former Democratic candidate for governor, that the case against him was politically motivated. But the jury accepted Fieger's trial testimony that he did not knowingly break the law. Johnson also was acquitted of all charges.
