I entirely agree with the article. I once had brought up a similar topic with the popular idea that Jesus had went to India. There are two such legends of which one is demonstrably a fabrication, while the other is at least disputable. Nevertheless the propagators of this myth are more successful than ever.

It is disappointing to see what has become of the genuine attempts to introduce Eastern forms of spirituality in Western countries in the 1950's and '60s. The article is from 1974 and already full of disillusion.

Real spirituality is unspectacular to the greatest part. It means hard work and doing simple things over and over again.

In the field of occultism and mysteries one has to distinguish between the true and the fictitious. This is not always easy. Some things including the existence of a deathless avatar Babaji or the physical resurrection of Christ may be later misinterpretations of symbolical imagery illustrating inner experiences or psychological or even spiritual truths (e.g. Mother Mary = Divine Mother etc.). There are also lots of frauds around. But make-believe and meaningless concepts you find in traditional religion too.

There was a famous theologian, Rudolf Bultmann, who claimed that the meaning inherent in ancient mythological and religious texts is there but inaccessible to the modern objectifiying mind. He tried to build a bridge, but I don't think it worked. You find a similar idea with Jung who believed to have found the bridge in alchemy -- but well, who understands alchemy?
