Subject: Breath

So we should try and find out what it is that everyone has. Saint and sages called it ‘pran shakti’ or life force. And so the Old Testament says, “God made man from the dust of the earth; He breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul.”

What is that breath that God breathed into us which made us alive and conscious? After that Holy Breath leaves the body, this lump of clay dissolves back into the earth. Muslims and Christians bury the corpse and Hindus cremate it. So it doesn’t matter what sect or religion a person belongs to, he is totally dependent on this life force.

Again I say; it is not an artificial breath. You may think that it is only oxygen and carbon dioxide. Scientists can manufacture oxygen and carbon dioxide but just you try to make a dead man alive by forcing oxygen into him! If this was possible, then our great leaders and intellectuals would never have died. They would have become immortal.

But no corpse has ever become alive by an infusion of oxygen. It means that there is an energy in us, superior to oxygen not obtained from air. That unique energy is the Divine Breath, the Word of God.

In the breath, the Word of God resides, and it is only through meditation that we can know it. In order to look outside you have to open a window, and this breath, the Word of God, is the window to perceive.

That is why the Bible said, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” In the beginning was Vibration, the basic activity was there. The basic foundation, the basic strength, the basic energy that created everything was there. Without energy nothing can be created. There has to be energy in the beginning.

Science also talks about energy being the ultimate thing. They say that the unconscious form of energy is matter. Energy is the conscious form of matter. When we are alive, we can experience, we can be aware of something. So in the same way, through meditation, we can be aware of what is within us. And this has always been the path of the saints.

Saints have said, “Meditate on the unchanted chant within the breath. It is the self-existing Divine Reality. Don’t let a single breath go by, without meditating on it.” This treasure within the breath, is the gift of God. Guru Nanak said of it, “The earth is the Word; the sky is the Word; the Word turns into Light. Everything in this universe emanates from this Word, and it dwells in every heart.”

What kind of Word is this? If you scientifically analyze words, what are they—vibrations. My vocal cords are vibrating and your eardrums are vibrating in resonance. The difference between solids, liquids, gases and plasma is simply in the rate of vibration of their molecules.

Ultimately, everything in the universe is nothing but a vibration, and the ultimate Vibration, the primordial Vibration, is that Word, the Cosmic Vibration, which makes everything in the universe vibrate.

When a guitar string is vibrated, the entire body of the instrument begins to vibrate too, because there is a resonance. If you strike a tuning fork it vibrates, and if you place it on a table, the table begins to vibrate in resonance, at the same frequency.

For example, my vocal cords are pronouncing a word, which makes the air vibrate. What is music? It is resonance. It is the expansion of a note. Now scientists are saying that atoms resonate—they are like tiny musical notes!

In the same way, the Supreme Self in everybody is vibrating and that Vibration is the Divine Word, the Logos, and expansion of that Word is Divine Harmony. Expansion of the Divine Music is Light, and expansion of Light is Nectar.

Now the manifestation of that primordial Vibration is Sat, chit, and anand—Truth, consciousness and bliss. So if you unite your mind with the primordial Vibration, then automatically your mind will vibrate with the same frequency as your Self, resulting in the experience of Truth, consciousness and bliss. When you know the Truth and are conscious of it, that consciousness results in bliss.
