I have the feeling many of the desires we need to overcome can be overcome just by substituting the bliss that comes from kriya. Desires are dependent on the senses, and when you conquer the senses by saturating yourself in the inner bliss, most of these desires dissolve by themselves. There is also the means of manifesting desires in dreams and visions, which is what Yogananda spoke of in his Gita.

I think Lahiri Mahashaya's case was special. Babaji probably saw that his desire for living in a palace (possibly from having been King Janaka in a past life) was something that could potentially cause an obstacle to his fulfilling the necessary mission of that life as the Yogiraj, so he fulfilled it right then and there. The palace desire was probably more than just a simple desire to live in a palace, it was the totality of the leftover samskaras of desiring or having access to worldly wealth. He was an accountant with a family who had the means to attain whatever he wanted to attain in the world, but to maintain just enough income to run his household and become the father of modern Kriya, he had to be rid of this subtle desire for amassing greater material wealth. But who can really say, Im just musing here.
