It may have been the desire he took on to get in a body. Yogananda said he took on desires for food to get in body.

A minister told me that some of the stories were played up for our instruction. Yogananda's "starvation" after missing one meal at the Mahamandal hermitage in Benaras is an obvious example. I can go without food a day without any probelm whatever.
