Excellent scholarly posts. I agree with your thought that shakti and aspiration are key. The first siddha from whom I received my "secret" initiation - Shantananda - came to the US from India, obviating any need for a Search in Secret India. He taught a meditation technique which was given out in strict secrecy. We received numbered copies of the instructions, and they were cataloged with our name. I recall once relating my experience of various kriyas which were integral to performance of his "secret" meditation technique, seeking some confirmation of spiritual progress, to which he replied, "No more movement until you understand Vedanta." I thought, hmmm ok, no more practice of the secret technique to which I was initiated until I understand the nature of the Atman... NOW how is that going to happen? I realized later that his statement WAS Vedanta - his interaction with students was the real carrier wave for the transmission of higher consciousness, not the "secret" meditation technique.
