Good post.

Your view is stated like traditional lines say it and Ashok also puts it this way.

Yogananda said the path of kriya is not a circus and to focus on God's love and bliss and do so all hours of the day. Offer him love he said. This is the yearning aspect of devotion but Lahiri emphasized the surrender aspect of what may be called devotion. In reality they are the same thing and may be 2 ways of stating it. The westerners may be more inclined to the yearning for God due to their more outward temperment. Who is to say it is better or worse than the Indian one.

I know Vishnudevananda said westerners can be great yogis due to their will, discipline and extra time. In India all the devotees want to be hit with peacock feathers and worship him but no one will do sadhana.

The sound and light are encouragements to get to the ultimate state that alone is the goal. It is not a goal in itself. You are right. But the westerners and Yogananda are more inclined to light and the Indians and traditional lines are to sound. We have discussed this on the board before. Also, Yogananda and west is focused on sambavi mudra and Lahiri oft seems more focues on kechari. However, in Pranab Gita the references to sambavi are many more that kechari. They both do the same thing and it may be best to do both.

Yogananda said you know a master from 2 signs: He can enter breathless state on command and has immutable bliss from nirbikalpa samadhi or full and constant relization of what Lahiri would call Paravasta or Brahma.
