I'm surprised there haven't been more reply's as this is surely an eternal dilemna.

As I see it, the issue of motivation and dedication can be both a detriment and a blessing. A detriment in that often in the west practice is done alone, possibly without considerable quality sangha and support and therefore what began as strong motivation can very readily dissipate into haphazhard practice at best.

Gurdjieff said clearly that our greatest delusion is that we can begin a particular task in one direction and continue it without change. What often happens is that one begins with some clear goal in mind and two years down the track is actually going in the opposite direction (law of octaves).

Without ongoing support and conscious beings to continually 'wake us up' there is little chance of sticking in one direction.

A blessing because often too much stock is placed in Sadhana and only one tree is seen within the whole forest. Remembering that Sadhana represents the ultimate surrender and not the strongest attachment can be a blessing. Establishing God presence within life at all times and extending love into the world can be often forgotten if one is too focused on everything being done within an hour or two of meditation each day.

Meditation for me is like fertilising the soil each day. We all have the same seed inside but often conditions are simply not ready. Gods grace is the water that eventually sprinkles down and causes the seed to sprout. Yet there are those whose seed may be buried too deeply or not deeply enough and for them many worldly experiences may need to be fulfilled before they feel the urgently pressing need for protracted Sadhana.
