Subject: Edgar Cayce's view on yoga

This particular breathing exercise was given to a number of people who came to Mr. Cayce for readings, although it was never called by the very similar yoga asana name, “alternate nostril breathing” (or anuloma viloma pranayama). It is interesting to note that many yogis consider this circular breath the most important of all the breathing exercises, perhaps because it brings fresh oxygen to the brain and is said to balance the right brain (feminine/ creative) and the left brain (masculine/ logical). You may practice the posture sitting on a chair with your feet flat and spine straight, or sitting comfortably on the floor, cross-legged:

First, press your right thumb on the side of your right nostril, closing off the breath. Rest your index and second finger of the right hand on your forehead. The third or ring finger of your right hand hovers over your left nostril.

As you close off the right nostril, breathe in through the left nostril for the count of four. Keep your right thumb pressed down and then press and close the left nostril with your ring finger. Holding both nostrils closed, count to four. Now lift your right thumb and exhale for the count of eight through your right nostril, still holding the left nostril closed. Exhalation always last twice as long as your inhalation. At first you may run short of air, but you will learn to extend and lengthen your breath the more you practice. Do this exercise at least five times each (five cycles) on both nostrils. When you finish, you will notice that you feel clearer, lighter, and more peaceful. yoga breathing is an excellent tool for calming the body, soothing the mind, and unifying the spirit. You can use it throughout the day when anything happens to upset you. Like most of the yoga poses, alternate nostril breathing has lifelong value and is something you can teach your children and other family members....
