What occured to me is that without Kriyananda, Ananda would be a spent force. The community of like-minded spiritual souls may remain intact but the ambitious drive of Kriyananda would be absent. I wonder if, karmically, this has kept Ananda and Kriyananda afloat; the fact that he is still doing the work of spreading the Guru's message even if tinged with self-importance and falls from grace.
