Ramdas said it takes tremendous faith to set a mantra working, making you achieve spiritual realisation. This is referring to nama japa. He called it a hook to fix the mind at.

So this is very subjective, and almost any mantra will do. It's the practitioner's own attitude that counts rather than the exact composition of the mantra. The latter probably only so far as you are aware of its meaning. Ramdas gave people different mantras, including a Jesus mantra to a Christian.

In the case of mantras having certain powers, the common faith is that its power is that of the person who gives it.

Repeating such a mantra, with correct pronunciation, will enable you to realise what the person who gave it to you and charged with his power, has realised or attained. Nothing else and nothing more than this.

So this method is not necessarily limited to spiritual gains. It is also used in occultism including black magic.

This method is also part of the tradition of Sant Mat. They use "Five Holy Words" to be repeated mentally (simran), but without being given by a 'Perfect Living Master' they are deemed worthless.

This is one of the things that make me doubt that this is a purely spiritual path. You will only get what you are given by the Master and have to totally depend on him to get anywhere and not fall into a ditch. Actually they admit it and are fine with it; Kirpal says that you can't go beyond the level of your master. This is a strange notion.

According to their doctrine this goes on in the afterlife as well, and the personal guide continues to be present until near the end of the road. But they bypass jnana and claim to already start with the levels beyond. This strikes me as strange.
