It's supposed that mantras (Gayatri, Om namah Shivaya, Om namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya, etc.) were given by God to the realized ones. These mantras are also charged by centuries of devoted repetition.

The mantras have bija sounds that activates certain energies in your subtle bodies; as Yoga says, the body is a microcosm. So if you repeat them consistently they will affect you. But if you repeat them with bhava the effect is bigger. Mantra repetition is also a meditation on the Divine that you can practice anytime, the mind stops wandering and and the thoughts are gathered in the Divine.

I understand that initiation in a mantra it's a diksha that must come from an enlighted person or from a lineage of devotees, to receive the full divine shakti. But if you repeat any mantra of the chosen aspect of the Divine you prefer the effect will be good anyway.
