Sant Mat makes initiates vow not to do any pranayam or kundalini yogas. This is included in the diksha.

In my view and Yogananda's as well the kundalini must awaken eventually and ascend. This happens when the nadi's are sufficiently cleansed and not otherwise. In kriya we untie the 3 knots in the spine from the top down. Th 1st is the ajna knot, second is the heart and third is the coccyx. When this is untied the kundalini awakens.

Yogananda also told people not to try to awaken kundalini by bastrika pranayam or the forceful mudras (viparita karani inculded) of hatha yoga. He was even for the natural attainment of kechari.

Guruji says some people meditate and have sexual sensations and think it is kundalini. Awakening kundalini is very difficult, it doesn't happen unless you are ready, and it is not sex force! If you wonder if it is awake--it is NOT. When it awakes you will know it. Before then some pranic movement may be happening but it is not kundalini.

I think he would agree that most of these so called kundalini awakenings today are due to emotional problems or some degree of psychosis. He also hammered that people deepen their devotion and attain purity of heart. If you don't have these the kundalini is juest a sensational topic of the mind.
