I say follow you heart and the path that catches your fancy. Then stick to it. Yearning for God and Attunement with the guru is more important than technique.

But I also think that Ramana had passed the spiritual eye in the previous life. Few of his own chelas actually did vichara but did appropriate yogas for their temperment and stage of deveoplment. Yogananda says the same: who are you--realize your real self. He makes clear in Science of Religion as to the whys of kriya--even a jyani must interiorize the prana and raise the kundalini in meditative stillness and then still his mind. Ramana agrees--all yogas including vichara are to make the mind one pointed and then dissolve the one point. Vichara is for the latter stage. The last thought is the I thought. Thats a high savikalpa samadhi that must be dissovled into nirvikalpa.

The bakti yogi must also sit down, concentrate on his devotional thought and meditate in stillness. Sivananda agrees on this--meditation is necessary for a karmi, bakti, and jyani. The difference is raja yoga takes the best of all 3 and if you have kriya you turn off the lifeforce scientifically. This has to be attained and it is not easy. Otherwise you cannot focus on one thought if the sense are not off! You cannot as the sense give info to the memories that stokes new thought streams! That is unless you mastered pranayam in the past life and the minute you sit pratyahara happens. This is the stage of Daya Mata as well as Yogananda. She says all she has to do is one kriya and she stops and goes into samadhi. A friend that was there says she doesn't even get the kriya all the 1st kriya up and she goes into it.

Read Paul Brunton and you see he did sit and meditate with vichara and he did see specks of light that later merged into one. This was at Ramanashram.
