Subject: Mary Magdalene - Yogi disciple of Christ?

Mary Magdalene in the Desert

July 22nd - Feast Day of St Mary Magdalene.

Many churches widely believed to be dedicated to The Virgin Mary are actually dedicated to Mary Magdalene. This includes the Cathedral of Notre Dame.

Mary Magdalene may have been one of Christ's closest disciples. She was the first that he appeared to after the ressurection, and is sometimes spoken of as the "Apostle to the Apostles."

The gnostic Gospel of Mary, one of the scriptures discovered at Nag Hammadi in Egypt in 1940 suggests she was a very high disciple, perhaps receiving hidden teachings not given to the other disciples.

Some aspects of her story can be interpreted in a yogic light. For example she is said to have had seven demons cast out of her by Christ. This could be interpreted as meaning that outward looking effects of the chakras had been reversed and the chakras awakened by kundalini.

In the Gospel of Mary she desribes rising through seven spheres, although these read more as vices the soul must overcome rather than a yogic technique.
