Yes, I think the question is not so much if someone is a true yogi or not. But if that person, teaching are for ME. To realise that reading, looking at photo was good enough for me, so I knew if I am interested in meeting a person or not. When I was in seach, for me was important if I have subtle experiences, feel a connection with a guru before I come to meet him/her. Because otherwise what a use? One might be a great yogi, but it is just not my thing, no karmic connection.
So I would say, seach for an answer INSIDE, in meditation.
