Yes, it is very hard to get realization without the physical company of a master. Still, he can bless thru the ether and give shaktipat--it seems the guru has control over the process of grace being meted out. Grace of god descends via the guru lineage. Kundalini awakening, penetrating kutasta and stilling the mind are impossible without god's grace thru the guru.

Then another thing is yama niyama is only fully attained in nirbikalpa samadhi. It is harder to truly master them than samadhi--yogi amrit desai admits this and I believe it.
