Hibernation?

No. Kriya Yoga in fact leads to a stage whereby you ENJOY THE WORLD MORE THAN BEFORE. You lose attachment to outer pleasures but it does not mean that you forget the world - no! It allows you to more freely be of the world because you no longer depend on it's limited pleasure for happiness.

Kriya is not hyperventilation. That sounds quite ridiculous and i do wonder about your integrity in questioning such a thing.

Kriya is controlling the life force which itself is tied to the breath. It uses the breath, but in a calm, easy and beautifully soothing way. Hyperventilation is quite unpleasant and is associated with the direct opposite of what kriya is and works create.

It is like me asking - is breathing while you sleep hyperventilation? It does not make any sense and sounds laudable at best.

Every action you perform, like walking down the road requires some exercise of will. Once you start to practise kriya it becomes like that - an effortless act. Do you think and analyse about the way your legs and body are moving when you walk down the road, or do you just naturally walk without thought?
