I am not sure about the shortness of breath that comes from improper kriya pranayam, i know from my own practise that in the beginning it can be like fighting a storm! The breath is very wild and uncontrolable, but even during one sitting (in the beginning of the practise of kriya pranayam) one can continue to practise with determination and soon will experience a great calming of the breath and a smooth unison of it's movements.

Kriya should be done, I remember reading from my Master, as a work of the holiest pujas. One should not sit their and sub-consciously analyse the progress of kriya - that extra bit of concentration should be applied to the pranayam. I think it is good to forget everything else and concentrate only on the kriya.

The great feature of kriya is that it will always correct itself, we never have to consciously improve it or "do it right", even practising it wrongly with devotion will lead to correct practise.

There is hope for us still
