Thats because through doing Kriya you become aware of your connection to the Guru and he knows just how you are performing Kriya, whether correctly or incorrectly. Your body is actually his, because in his awareness he is you. He will make the Kriya right because he wants you to do it properly. What would be the point of practicing incorrectly?

The devotion is important because thats what allows the Guru's all-fulfilling power in God to make it right by the automatic response to your devotion in his own consciousness.
