Subject: I watch very few current movies. Most of them just don't appeal to me. But that's okay. Going to the theater isn't in the budget right now. I rent from Netflix instead--it's a whole lot cheaper. So I'm getting caught up on a lot of older movies I missed. I recently rented a couple of older rom coms that I really loved. I had never even heard of them before, but they popped up in my "recommended" list, they got good viewer ratings and reviews, and they sounded promising, so I figured I'd try them.

The first is "Only You" from 1994 with Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr. Marisa's character was told, as a child, by both a fortune teller and a ouija (sp?) board that her soulmate was a man named Damon Bradley. Years later, she is engaged, but a man calls to say he can't come to the wedding because he'll be in Italy. His name? You guessed it. It's Damon Bradley. So, she and her sister-in-law take a spur of the moment trip to Italy and spend the rest of the movie trying to find the real Damon Bradley. This movie was sweet, funny, and romantic. The scenery is beautiful and Robert Downey Jr is the handsomest I've ever seen him.

The second movie is "Return to Me" from 2000 with Minnie Driver and David Duchovny. Minnie Driver's character is a young woman in desperate need of a heart transplant. David Duchovny's character's wife is in a tragic car accident and her heart goes to Minnie Driver's character, of course. A year later, they meet and start dating, but she is afraid to tell him about her heart transplant because she is afraid of how he'll react to the big scar on her chest, so they do not know about the connection. As sweet as their romance is, one of the best parts of the movie is the four old guys who run the Italian/Irish family restaurant. One is Minnie's grandfather (Carroll O'Connor). After hours, they spend their time playing cards, debating, scheming, meddling, etc. They are like a cross between the old guys in the JAG ep "Yesterday's Heroes" and the family in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". There is a scene where the men are playing Sinatra and dancing with each other that is just hilarious!

The plots of these movies may be a little far-fetched and predictable, but they are such great movies that I didn't care about that. I love a good romance I can escape into and these were perfect. They were sweet and funny, and CLEAN. The bad language was kept to a decent minimum and there was (gasp) no sex. I get so tired of movies where they leads sleep together on the first date. They even had one character tempted to cheat on her less than perfect husband and she DIDN'T. So nice to see that these days.

Incidentally, both of these movies featured Bonnie Hunt (love her!) in a supporting role. Funny that I rented them back to back without even realizing that she was in both of them.

If you are looking for something light and fun to watch, I highly recommend both of these movies. I just can't figure out why I had never heard of either one of them before. Am I the only one who missed them the first time around?
