Subject: I read somewhere that reality shows draw such a vastly large audience than all the classic detective/crime-shows and really any genre -- sit-coms, other dramas -- that the network execs just can't seem to help it when they pull the plug on shows. They have NO choice but to give the public what they seem to want regardless of the quality (can you say 'Jersey Shore', anyone?!) of what they're airing. THIS, to me, is the saddest REALITY of all.

[> [> I agree. I hate the entire concept of reality shows and refuse to watch any of them! When I first heard about this new up and coming show called Survivor, I thought it was the most ridiculous thing I had ever heard of and I truly didn't think anyone would watch it. But what do I know? lol Just give me a good old fashioned game show without anyone discussing their feelings about losing! -- JAG Junkie (Ronda), 06:44:19 05/26/11 Thu [1]

[> [> [> [> I don't see any reason why we can't have it all. I love dramas and sitcoms, documentaries, and the news. Heck, I even love Bugs Bunny. I am a shameless fan of Surivivor and a number of competition shows, particulary SYTYCD, and America's Best Dance Crew. I discovered some of the Real Housewives shows this year, when I was doing boring stuff in the day and saw reruns. (Inside) -- Cece, 12:51:38 05/26/11 Thu [1]

I actually have fun watching RHONY and RHOC, and was disgusted with RHONJ. I don't take them too seriously, but you can learn a lot about human behaviour...good and bad, and see patterns regardless of the forum. In fact, when I watch some of the emotion and fights, they remind me so much of my years on the HarmyBoard...LOL.

Are they Shakespeare? Yes and No. I think I can safely say I am something of a Shakespeare aficionada (but not a Shakespeare snob), having read just about the complete works, studied many of the plays and poems, and can discuss them almost intelligently, LOL. These plays were not written only for the educated class. On the contrary, they are in the language of the common folk, they get down and dirty, they make lascivious references, and they were popular with the street crowds who would mock, jeer, cheer on, weep, laugh, and yell from the apron stage front. It's only our generations who look on Shakespeare as high culture.

So I can say without shame, that I will take my education and entertainment from a variety of sources, good and bad, and until I stop learning about the human condition, I'll continue to do so.

[> [> [> [> [> Not sure if my response came off pompous or vacuous. Probably both. I guess what I'm trying to say is that not all shows under the "reality" rubrik, are bad. Neither are they all worthwhile watching. (The same thing can be said about other genres.) I pick and choose what I find interesting, amusing, and/or entertaining and ignor the rest. But it does upset me that Realty tv might have pushed dramas et.al out because of their relative low cost. -- Cece, 15:48:06 05/26/11 Thu [1]

[> [> [> [> [> [> Not pompous or vacuous. All these reality shows just make me long for the days of old fashioned game shows. Every time I try to watch one and they sit down to talk about how they feel about another player I just feel like shouting at the screen "Good grief, give me a break!" LOL -- JJ (Ronda)--I also like the "black & white"-ness of old game shows: clear winners & losers where opinions don't factor in at all, but then again, I'm an accountant. ;-), 18:55:47 05/26/11 Thu [1]
