Subject: Our Frontcourt

Iona's frontcourt was skilled (Wachsman) and Athletic (Bruin) but its a shame that we could not see what Maxwell and Middleton could do against them, especially since the Max-Middleton combo played so well vs St Peters. While the game was fairly Referee'ed, the 2 early calls on Max caused us to play Max and Middleton for just 4 minutes.

They are our best combo right now, as Middleton takes some pressure off Max from fouling, and that is so key to have Max in the game. Middleton's defense is improving, and while he is no Deng Gai, just him being out there creates a presence with his long arms and height. He does alter shots and makes players think twice before they shoot.

Middleton also does not foul much. But there is a good and bad to that. At St Peters he was the most physical that I have seen him,and he had 4 or 5 fouls... thats good. Last night only 1 foul in 18 minutes. But if he could have taken 3 of Max's fouls, then thats what I would have wanted to see. A physical Middleton, creates more of a presence, and thats what he can provide.

Mamadou got some nice baskets because he knows how to position himself, but he struggled with his back to the basket. But neither he nor Carter offers defensive help for Max..... and that is critical to keep Max in the game, and not have to work so hard. I would also like to see Mamadou get some time at the SF to see how effective he is at that position, both defensively or offensively.

Carter seems more comfortable as a change of pace guy. He has a role, but obviously not as a starter.

maxwell is our only true frontcourt starter, and we need mos to return to be able to compete with the likes of iona. middleton has advanced to the stage that he can give us twenty minutes, but can you honestly say he is a legit starter in this league. mamado is another one that just needs more experience and should not be starting right now. i don''t see carter improving except for an occassional good game. this is still work in progress unless mos returns.

Middleton is better than Sunday E, Andi Woodley and many other folks that have started at center for Fairfield in the past. These players were not "legit" maac starters yet they started for FU because they were the best available option.

We could debate whether or not Middleton is "a legit starter in this league" but the fact is he is the only "legit" Center Fairfield has. He has to play at least 20 minutes a game unless and until he is harming the team. From what I have seen he gives the team what they need, solid defense, some shot blocking, rebounds and he has been hitting more than half his shots.

If someone else can do better they should be playing. But there is noone better at Fairfield right now, so Middleton needs to play.

TOT made a major mistake not recruiting another second center for this team. Now he has to play the only cards he has.

agree that middleton should be a starter by default however his effectiveness is spotty at best and just like sunday or woodtli he plays less than half a game. i think you are overrating middleton. we need mos to return this year for any hope of beating the better teams in this league, even though i hope he redshirts.

Honestly, I do not see the realistic benefit of having MOS return this year. He has missed so much time that it is doubtful that he would be able to get into shape to be able to help. In addition not playing ball for several months means that he will be very rusty and his contribution minimal. Wouldn't you rather have him back for the next two years when the team has an opportunity to improve significantly and we have a stronger frontcourt? Better to have him for two years than for one and a few games.
