In reply to: ktuck911 's message, "Recruiting needs to step up.." on 08:33:35am 01/19/06 Thu,

During the first few years of the current coaching regime it was the recruiting that was the strength, while it was X's and O's or game preparation/adjustments that was viewed as deficient. I thought bringing in Deng Gai, Sam Spann, Terrance Todd, Michael Bell, Marty O'Sullivan, Herbie Allen was excellent - weren't all these players very highly touted?

The criticism should be directed at 1) The use or mis-use of the talent, 2) Not bringing in the height needed this year, and 3) Not being able to overcome the uncertainty from the investigation, if that is indeed a reason for lack of big men.

IMO, the reason that we did nopt get a big amn the last few years except for Middleton is 2-fold

- The investigation overlapped 3 recruiting signing period, 2 of which were the early fall period where ther are more available big guys. That hurt us until Jan 2005.

- Secondy, during and after that time period, TOT stedfast with his startegy to go after top Big Men, and passed on some lower level big men in the process. I agree with the basic strategy of shooting high under normal condidtions; However, we were not under normal circumstances..... with the investigation and lack of depth of Big Men.... so in hindsight we should have taken some of those lower level big men.

How many scholarships are available? 12? That's about 2 people at each of the 5 positions. If you look at our roster we have Middleton and O'Sullivan as center's. It's very unfortunate that MOS got hurt. It's also a bit unfortunate that Middleton isn't quite ready to take over the starting center position yet (although some of us think he is). How many center's are we supposed to have? Without MOS's injury there isn't much of a complaint on the lack of bigs. Yes we can be deeper and taller, but it's the MAAC. If you take out every team's starting center in the MAAC i'm sure many would be "small" and hurting like we are now.

The MAAC is not going to get blue-chip recruits all the time, so you settle for the best available players, thus a guard-heavy league...

Maxwell is a solid PF in the MAAC, he's only 6'5", so to be somewhat small at PF you kind of need a tall center.
