In reply to: Stagman 's message, "Gai: 7 pts, 3 rebs, 2 blocks vs Nets Last Night" on 07:58:08am 10/22/05 Sat,

ESPN has the text to the play-by-play and I did the Hockey +/- stat while Gai was in the game, and he was a +9. His stats were good last night, but his true value as a backup PF/C will be if the team can still be effective with him in the game..... and I think he has shown that all pre-season. Here's the breakdown.

1Q - Gai enters game with score 15-14, and the quarter ends 28-21... a +7 gain for 76ers. Gai has 5pts, 3 rebs

2Q - Gai plays 5 min and ... a +2 gain for 76ers.

3Q - Gai plays 4 min and 76er's go from 58-57 to 74-68 lead ..... a +5 for 76ers. Gaihas 2 blocks, a dunk and 1 assist.

4Q - Gai plays last 2 minutes of game and 76er's lose a 3 point lead as Richard Jefferson scores final 4 points..... -5 for 76er's. Would have been nice if Gai could have helped close out this game. Good game none-the-less.

[> [> RealGM Debate About Gai -- Stagophile, 10:59:00am 10/22/05 Sat, [1]

There is a great thread on the Sixers RealGM Forum debating Gai making the team. The opinions run the gamut. Some fans think he should be cut, while others love his upside and think he deserves a spot on the team.

The paragraph below summarizes quite well the situation.... there are 11 players on the Roster, but Bradley is injured (and so is Jamal Mashburn and Willie Green)... so there is really 2 open spots to start the season. James Thomas is a very good rebounder, and Gai is the shot blocker. Thomas probably has a slight edge, but Gaican play PF and C. I think both could possibly make it, but during the season Thomas, Gai, and 18 year old guard Louis Williams (2nd round draft choice) could rotate onto the Injured reserve list trading places with Shavlik Randolph (currently injured), guard Famitini and Michael Bradley.

This is great for me, as I am also a big 76er's fan

"Without a doubt on the roster is 11 players: Michael Bradley, Samuel Dalembert, Steven Hunter, Andre Iguodala, Allen Iverson, Kyle Korver, Lee Nailon, Kevin Ollie, John Salmons, Chris Webber, and Louis Williams. Probably on the roster is 2 more: Jamal Mashburn and Willie Green (what's the story with him? Anyone with any factual info there?)."

[> [> If You Like the NBA and You Like Stats... -- Stagman, 12:21:48pm 10/22/05 Sat, [1]

Joe,

Your +/- reference reminded me of a site I saw recently called

www.82games.com

If you are an NBA fan and like stats above and beyond the standard ones, this is a great site.

It's a great site for math majors like Joe and me!

It is a great site. And i like how they kept teh stat when a player is not on the court too.... makes a lot of sense. Must have been designed by Math Major.

I always thought the +/- stat for Basketball was a very usefull stat, just like it is in hockey..... maybe more so in Hoops. That stat is not applicable to Baseball or Football as both those sports don't transition from offense to defense in the same flow of the game.

IMO, basktball is very popular because of its offense, and because of that, fans ignore the defensive end of the game. And since defense in Hoops is just as much team as it is individual, its hard to distinguish where something breaksdown..... like calling out a pick.

I think all good coaches focus on defense, as its 55-60% of this game. The extra 5% to 10% is because of the old saying "defense creates offense"..... but its not just a saying, or a momentum thing. About 10 points a game is probably scored directly because of defense..... not too mention all the indirect points that come from defense.
