Congratulations to Iona! Plus I think this shows how the MAAC is rebounding nicely on the recruiting scene. Siena with Ubiles, Fairfield with Nero, Probably Canisius with Magee, Rider with Thompson. The MAAC is rising!!!

That said, this is extremely frustrating. We just cannot land the big man in the middle. There is such an glaring opportunity in the middle and nobody seems to want to step up and take advantage of it.

I suspect Iona was the better fit for Alejo because of Coach Ruland. Their 6' 11" Center transfer from Penn St. specifically mentioned that he choose Iona because of the opportunity to play for a coach who understands and can develop the big man.

Tom Fraher, Rodriguez's coach at Mount, said Iona was the right spot for him.

"It's a great fit for him and the MAAC is perfect for him," Fraher said. "His best asset is he's a real good rebounder, has a nose for the ball. He's a very good defender. Between Iona and Fairfield he was going to be in a good program either way. But I think Iona is a better fit for him as a player."

Question...Was Coach McLeod an assistant coach when we recruited both Thompson and Gai? If so, this may support my point that a big man coach is going to have more success recruiting the big man. And if so, what does this say about TOT's coaching staff? If we are going to recruit the big man, does TOT need to bring on a big man coach???

Stagophile, who is the big man's coach for Duke? They seem to get big people without a former center on the staff. You don't have to be a former center or power forward to coach big men. I don't know the strengths or weaknesses of our coaches in this area, but I do know that you don't have to be a former center to be sucessful in this area. Maybe the perception of the potential recruit is more important than it should be. If it is, then perhaps Tim should address it.

Sorry to say it, but, Duke is Duke and they can't recruit anybody they want. I am just observing that Iona has been very successful in recruiting big men and several specifically have commented about the opportunity to play for and learn from Coach Ruland. Further, we have not landed a quality big man since McLeod left town. Coincidence, correlation, direct affect, I don't know, but, I think they are interesting observations.

McLeod recruited nobody. He was only around for about 5 months. To credit him with anything is a misnomber. I hate to be so direct with McLeod's accomplishments.

Both Gai and Thomson were recruited, before Mcleod. Gai and Ajou were definitely Hobbie recruits, and Thomson was either Hobbie or Matt Roe.... but I think Hobbie was the guy..... along with TOT of course.

Certainly having Ruland is a big advantage in recruiting big man, even though I do not think that has resulting in Iona having any more big men than any other MAAC schools.

If any school has had a success with Big Men its Fairfield. Our last 3 centers, Phillips, Thomson and Gai, have all signed themselves nice professional contracts, and have reached the Status of 1st team All-MAAC. Thats 7 years of successful centers. Also Phillip leading the nation in Rebounding, and Gai leading the nation in block shots is quite an accomplishemnt. I bet if you add Phillips, Thomson and Gai's pro contacts up, they are probably making close to 1.5mil a year.

So the question is more how we can parlay that success into landing another Center. I am sure recruits are made aware of that success. IMO, those results are far more important to recruiting.

Hmmm...I didn't realize McLeod's tenure was that short...definitely changes my thinking! Fairfield certainly does have a excellent story to tell with Phillips, Thomson and Gai which should address any perception problems that Rave alluded to. I guess it's just a matter of patience and the coaches finding the right fit with a recruit. The opportunity is there, let just hope someone recognizes it. The silver lining here with Alejo is that we where right there to the very end and his coach had some positive words for Fairfield.

The dissapointment was that we were making very good progress in recruiting in the Catholic schools in NYC/LI with Herbie, Han and Mamadou. At the same time Iona was struggling to get NYC players for a few years. But we still lost out to them.

However Rodriguez is not the only option

Hard to appreciate having a quality big man inside until he's gone. And you indeed had a nice run of 'em, with the guys you listed. Iona did as well, with Larsen then Hameed then Miller then Jenkins. I think Wax is in for a solid season, but he's obviously not on the same level as those four guys.

Ruland did produce a good run of centers if you included Larsen and Hameed from his assistant days. But when Ruland became Head coach, I think everyone expected him to recruit many more Centers because of his NBA experience...... unless we count the Ramel Allen's and Sensely's and others.
