I guess you don't know your college basketball history. Your "absurdities" are not so far fetched. You ever hear of the National Catholic Invitational Tournament?

This blurb appeared in the Cincinnati Enquirer in December.

Event for Jesuit schools never got full support
Xavier notebook

By Dustin Dow
Enquirer staff writer

OMAHA, Neb. - Just a few years ago, there was a vision that tonight's game between Creighton and Xavier would be a part of something larger.

Instead, when Xavier and Creighton meet at 8 p.m. at Qwest Center Omaha, Creighton's 15,500-seat arena, it will feature two of the most successful Jesuit basketball programs in the country, but that's it.

The plan headed by Creighton and Xavier to create a Jesuit Shootout among the nation's Division I Jesuit basketball programs never came to be.

It had the leadership of both schools' athletic directors and the support of ESPN, which wanted to model such an event after the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

But it didn't have two of the most prominent Jesuit basketball programs, Gonzaga and Marquette, on board, which ultimately stalled the idea.

"ESPN was willing to give up commercial spots to televise ads about the Jesuit mission and the participating schools' commercials," Creighton athletic director Bruce Rasmussen said. "Gonzaga and Marquette didn't want to be a part of it. I was really disappointed with their response."

Rasmussen worked closely with former Xavier athletic director Mike Bobinski and former Xavier president, the late Fr. James E. Hoff, S.J., in developing the concept. But Gonzaga and Marquette, which have higher national profiles than other Jesuit programs, did not see a benefit in participating.

"There are a lot of people across the country that don't know what it means to be a Jesuit school," Rasmussen said. "Fr. Hoff and I thought this was a tremendous idea to promote the Jesuit mission. ESPN was very interested."

Call it whatever you like but Fairfield, Fordham, Holy Cross and Georgetown playing a tournament among themselves just might fill some seats at AHY with their alumni from the area.

Of course very successful programs like Gonzaga and Marquette wouldn't want to be part of it. Why would Georgetown want to play in a tournament with Fordham, Holy Cross, and Fairfield? And who's gonna guarantee money to make it worth their while? We already know that Fordham doesn't draw at AHY. I know Holy Cross wouldn't do any better. And 3-8 Fairfield?
The idea is ludicrous.
