Subject: Observations from the 4th Row

So I went to Ruby Tuesday's on Friday night. The entire Canisius basketball team was there enjoying dinner. That was the first (and only) time I found out that there was a game this weekend at the Arena.

FIRST POINT - Why is the marketing SO BAD that the only reason I heard about the game was by seeing the opposing team eat dinner!?! I am a very casual Fairfield fan... I am the target audience they should be reaching. This is unacceptable.

The student section had... I swear I am not making this up... one guy in it. Honestly... it was one student, a Bridgeport cop and maybe an usher.

SECOND POINT - I know school is not in session BUT Fairfield students tend to live within a 90 minute radius. It is absolutely unacceptable that ZERO students show up. When Georgetown is out of town they have a local high school band come in and play during the TOs. It creates an energy in the crowd and helps build a new generation of fans. Fairfield should look into that. Wouldn't it be nice to support the Fairfield High band or a band from a school in B-port!?!?

The biggest roar of the crowd BY FAR was when a dude hit a half-court shot and won $500 in text books.

THIRD POINT - Great shot! Although the odds of this guy being picked to take the shot were pretty good... he was the fan I referred to above! Yes, they only had one student in the building that was not wearing a uniform so they had no choice but to pick this guy. Great shot though...

They had a reception for the "Sixth Man" after the game.

FINAL POINT - Who is the "Sixth Man"? Are they referring to the fact that more than 5 people actually showed up to watch the game? If that place had more than 800 people I would be shocked.

Bottom line - The crowd is just pathetic. I think that is the buggest issue FU will face in terms of recruitment. I also think it helps to contribute to the fact that FU has no evident "home court" advantage. I sat next to the Canisius families and they felt right at home.

I love Fairfield and I support everything they do. EVERYONE needs to act with a sense of urgency to correct these issues.

The Canisius coach grew up in Ridgefield and always has a strong group of supporters at this game every year. We should be so lucky to have him for a coach
