Subject: Advocate coverage on the game

"Look at the defensive numbers today," O'Toole said after the Stags dropped an 83-72 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference decision to Canisius College. "They're disastrous."

The disastrous numbers:

x Canisius shot 60 percent from the field, including 67 percent in the second half and 58 percent from 3-point range (The Griffs came in shooting 30 percent from long range).

x The Griffs outrebounded the Stags 34-15 on the defensive glass, including 16-3 in the second half.

x The Griffs missed 11 shots in the second half -- seven on field goals on 14-for-21 shooting, and four on free throws (15-19). Incredibly, Canisius grabbed eight of the 11 rebounds off their own misses.

"The problem is we can get laissez-faire on defense at times," said O'Toole who has become known as the one of the top defensive coaches in the MAAC since getting the Fairfield job in 1998-99. "I think the reason is that we have so many guys who can score that they think they get away with it."

Uh, that was another problem yesterday. Aside from Terrence Todd who had a season-high 25 points, the "scorers" didn't do much scoring. The Stags (3-8, 1-2 MAAC) shot 34 percent yesterday. Maxwell, the star of Thursday's win over Siena with 18 points and 10 rebounds, failed to make a single shot from the field yesterday, going 0-for-6 and finishing with 5 points.

Aside from Todd, the other starters combined for 16 points. Only Michael Van Schaick was able to join Todd in double figures with 11 points.

While people point to Todd as the leading scorer, I'm having trouble getting excited about a player who shoots 30% from the floor.

Any player shooting 8-23 a)should need major icing on his arm after the game and b) be re-evaluated as the go to guy...better yet don't they establish team play at mini camp for 5th graders???

There are a number of factors that led to our loss on Saturday. First, Canisius was unconscious from 3-pt land in the 2nd half. I think it would be a good idea to defend one of these shots, right? What Canisius was doing was NOT rocket science, it's called ball reversal, move the ball and find the open man and boy, were they OPEN.

I think it was mentioned earlier but, how many layups and put-backs did we flat out miss? I can think of 3 or 4 by Dewitt and 1 gimme by Herbie late in the second half. We just didn't execute. As good as I felt after the Siena game, I now feel the same way negatively.

Hopefully, we can take some sense of urgecy to Rider this week. And I agree, although TT had a high scoring game, his percentage has got to increase.

Nice to see big Geoff drop six straight in the paint on Saturday. Although he looks woefully out of position from time to time and his shots aren't things of beauty, we need his presence inside to allow tighter perimeter coverage.

While I agree that Todd took too many shots and needs to pass more and better. 10 of those shots came in the last 5 min, when we were trying to catch up...... 4 in the last 30 sec.

He is the player that can get off a good shot in a hurry. I think his intention was to get us back in the game..... and he has done that before.

JOE STAG - done that before or not, regardless the odds were not in his favor to sink the shot. Deep in the game when he started going haywire trying to catch up there could of been better decisions made from the senior leader.

I take nothing away from Todd...he can get off a good shot in a hurry...but nothing was good for Todd that night.

In saying that it was ok for him to go on like he did in the last lets say 8 minutes (crucial minutes of the game) would you have let him take the ball like he did and just go ballistic?? Being a hero of one game doesn't mean he is a hero 24-7, he needs to understand the art of delegation and start relying on his teammates who are just as capable...may I dask say of stealing his spotlight.
