Subject: Boone Pickens donates $165 million to OSU athletics

Oklahoma State University officials announced today that legendary oilman Boone Pickens has donated $165 million to be used to fund one of the nation’s most comprehensive collegiate athletic complexes during the next five to 10 years.

“My passion for OSU has only intensified over the years as I recognize the link between my education and my success,” said Pickens, 77. “I believe that developing teams that are competitive in all sports requires the best facilities possible. Developing those facilities will help move the university into a new era, both in athletics and academics. Athletics have proven to be a significant contributor in the academic success of an institution, both from a fundraising and a performance perspective.”

A key element of long-term success, Pickens said, is a broader base of alumni financial support for OSU.

“This is a truly remarkable gift,” said the University. “Mr. Pickens’ $165 million donation to our athletic program is a critical component of our three-pronged approach to developing a top-tier university. Athletics, academics, and student life must all fit together to build a competitive institution.

“Boone is a winner with a vision and high expectations,” OSU Athletic Director Mike Holder said. “It’s now up to us to deliver. His gifts are an inspiration to all Cowboy followers. It is imperative that all Cowboy alumni contribute at a greater level than ever before, and we are dedicating ourselves to making that happen.”

Time for somebody on this board to step up to the plate and make that kind of donation to Fairfield. Come on, Stagman, Reindeer Fan, Stagophile, Antman ... Show me the money!

Think of it, the new "Stagman Center" - seating 5,000 for basketball.

Or the "Reindeer Fan Athletic Center" with a retractabale roof.

If somebody donates $165 million to Fairfield athletics, I guarantee that the men's hoop team will win at least two MAAC titles every decade.

Well, I did make my Annual Fund donation last night, however, I suspect it would only afford the purchase of a couple of uniforms. Let me work on my fortune for a couple more years! :-)

All kidding aside, what needs to be done is for some more alumni or friends of Fairfield, like Walsh, Lessing and Dolan have done to get on board with a special capital campaign just for athletics this time. Quinnipiac already has their new arena's name sold for $5,000,000 and has a lot of it's other naming choices sold. How about the Cablevision Arena or the GE Arena at Alumni Hall?

I too have sent my donation in already but sadly nothing is going to named for me on campus.
