Subject: Connecticut Budget Surplus: What Should Be Done With It?

How about the return of the annual funding of institutions of higher education like Fairfield!!! Before 2002, Fairfield annually received approximately $1.1M from the State of Connecticut. Faced with budget deficits the State cut this funding leaving the Fairfield administration with difficult choices. The result was the dreaded dropping of our football and hockey programs. Now with the Wall Street Journal indicating that a $524M surplus is anticipated and some projecting up to a $700M surplus, I hope the State is considering and I hope the University is lobbying for the return of this annual funding. If the University is successful, perhaps we could see the freeing up of resources to fully support our athletics programs!!!

I skimmed an article that indicated one important use would be to shore up inadequately funded pension obligations for teachers and other state employees(?). It sounded like pension funding was short.
