Subject: Scout - David Boykin

Scout had this story today on 6-2 David Boykin who is listing the Stags. Here are some of the details:

- David Boykin scored 12 of his game high 20 points in the second half, directing White Plains H.S. to a 63-43 victory over Don Bosco Prep. .

- "He played a great game both defensively and offensively," Mayfield said. "He put the ball in the right places and got it to the right people at the right time. Last year he was on pace to be a Division I player," Mayfield said. "People didn't have a chance to see him in the summer, so now we're trying to play catch up."

- Boykin had corrective surgery on his spine for scoliosis in March, 2005. "By September, I was back at full strength. I'm surprised I was able to come back so quickly. I thought I might lose a step, but I didn't."

- Albany, Binghamton, Fairfield and Army and Navy are among the schools looking at Boykin.

- Boykin is fully qualified academically, and has a 3.5 GPA.

We need two big men for next year. We can use the other scholarship on the best available candidate. I think Fairfield made a big mistake not taking a big man this year.

Geesh! TOT needs to attempt to recruit a big man of substance... a kid that's 6'6 or better... You guys need frontcourt help that can help NOW and not 2 or 3 years down the road... Your guards are thorough... You got that part down... Time to bring in some big men...

We are losing a lot of guards over the next 14 months (Todd, Bell, MVS, Oglesby), so we still need to recruit at that position.

We have 3 scholarships to give next year at lest 1 will be a big man, maybe 2...... but that leaves us 1-2 ships for a Guard and Wing (3G/SF) type of player. If we get the right Big Man then next year we will have the following front court players :

6-10 Middleton
6-8 to 6-10 Recruit (hopefully)
6-7 Nero
6-7 O'Sullivan
6-6 Reedal
6-6 Hawkins
6-4 Mamadou

Getting the "Right" big man, is a must. We need someone that can play right of way. With the other 2 ships I think we take the best players available, but we really need a wing 3G/SF. IMO, a wing player that can play some defense and score about 30ppg is important.

IMO, FF's wish list would be Yannick Formbor Nono, Rob Hampton from CTK and the best remaining guard. The interesting thing about Boykin is that he has grown 3 inches since his back surgery. Right now, he's a 6'3 point guard. I'd take those three in a minute!

[> Weston HS Big Man -- redsea, 12:59:09pm 01/12/06 Thu, [1]

Has anyone seen John Galvin from Weston HS play, 6 ft 8 or 9 center as a junior..projected to be 6 ft 10...Weston produced a kid named Sisca last year who went to Vermont. I have not heard who is recruiting Galvin

I have seen him. He is big, with good solid upper body. Plays fundamentally as far as footwork, catching ball, positional defense, etc. In this game (which happened to be only loss of season so far), he reaaly did not take a shot from anywhere but near the basket. He hit two or three early, but then got double and triple teamed (because no one else could hit a jump shot that night), and therefore had trouble scoring for the rest of the night. Blocked two or three attempts, but more from good position, rather than leaping. Could develope into low to mid D-1, considering he is only a Jr.

I will ask about his recruitment but I hear he has the potential to be even taller. His dad is a 7 footer..I think 7'2. I think his sister is 6'4.

John Galvin had 30 points and 17 rebounds as Weston beat Bethel 90-43 last night. The competition is probably pretty weak.

His father was a 7 footer out of So. Illinois, a 2nd round pick of the Sonics.

[> Nero is an MOS clone -- Red Hooker, 11:28:29pm 01/13/06 Fri, [1]

Nero is the same type of player as MOS. However, Nero's high school plays in an awful league. But the kid did well with the City Rocks in AAU. He'll get you guys a couple of buckets and couple of boards next year - but he's not All-Rookie material.

Nero's team won again last night.

Red Hooker, thanks for the report, and agree his HS plays a weak schedule, but we had some good live reports on Nero from a his teams win over a top St Mary's of LI and Kingston (10-1) team. Any details about his game would be appreciated

Red Hook 90, New Paltz 57 — The Red Raiders took a 45-21 lead at the intermission and went on to the victory. Greg Nero scored 26 points and grabbed 18 rebounds. He also blocked five shots and totaled five assists.

Disagree with you Red Hooker. Nero is much more athletic and quicker than MOS. Both can pass well and hit outside shots. Nero can put it on the floor and dribble better than MOS. I am not knocking MOS, on the contrary, if we had him know with Max. and Mamadou, we would be a different team.

I have seen them both play and would agree Nero jumps better than MOS. Skills wise on the other hand Marty is much futher along than Greg, espically shooting the basketball. The best part about this talk is the longer MOS is out the more it looks like we are going to have them together in the front court with Mamadoo for the next two seasons.

Saw Nero in person for first time last night. As Rave says, he is faster than MOS, and is very impressive in "speed dribbling" the length of court. Red Hooker, you are right about the quality of competition, however as stated, Nero has done great things against tougher teams. He really does have a complete game as far as shooting, passing, handling, etc., as well as being very active on defense, an showing great leaping ability. The only thing I didn't see is if he is a good man to man defender, because Red Hook played half court pressure zone the whole game (mostly 1-3-1). I have seen other Stag recruits in High School over the years, and IMO, Nero is further along in developement than most.
