Subject: Rating the MAAC Facilities
In reply to: rdjc 's message, "hey joe" on 12:21:43pm 01/12/06 Thu,

I have never been to Niagara or Canisius so I can't rate those, except for the HSBC arena. I'd rather give the pluses and minuses and compare them in groups:
The Arena's
----------------------
The Pepsi is the best because they have good fan support in numbers and they are vocal.... even though it gets lost in the spaciousness of a double deck arena. Plus there are multiple drinking establishments within walking distance of the arena. That package makes it the best.. Harbor Yards is clean and the right size, but if Fairfield cannot draw at least 3,500 in their with students the atmosphere is too quiet because of the the older fan base like myself. However for 10% of Fairfield games, we have had that good crowd, and the atmosphere is top notch. So I look at it this way..... put Siena's fan base in AHY, and it would be obvious what is the best facility. SBA can be the same as AHY except its worn down a bit, and have not seen a decent crowd in there.

Fans Make the Facility
-------------------------------
Marist's facility is in a class by itself because the fans make the McCann Center. Nothing special about the facility except it does have bleachers behind the basket which is key. They get very good student and fan support. Manahttan's facility is not good, but if the crowd size is decent it is very good atmosphere, good sized bleachers on all 4 ends of the court. Both Marist's and Manhattans facilities have character.

Loyola, Iona St Peters
-------------------------------
Basically the same facilities. Loyola is cleaner, and I really have not seen a decent crowd there.... but I guess I will this year. Iona's bleacher's and seats are farther away from the court than the other 2 which is not as good. I like Yanitelli at St Peters the best just because the crowd seems to get into it more, and I usually see a good amout of Fairfield fans there because of its location. Iona would be 2nd because they draw a consistently good crowd, and Loyola gets an incomplete. Neither of these facilites have character.

Rider
-----------------
High School gym is definitely the worst facility, but probably the best one to watch a game as you are closest to the action..... even with a chairback seat. So I actually like going there.

So If I were to choose the venues I would like to go to it would be Pepsi, AHY, Rider, Marist. Now if I was to put Alumni Hall in the mix, it would be #1.

Alumni Hall when filled to capacity with even only 2479 screaming fans a few feet from courtside and with the back bleachers filled would be the best "home court advantage" in the MAAC. I have only been to Iona and while it is clean and the lower seats are better than the upper ones, it is typical of most modern small gyms. They all seem to look like the interior of a small Home Depot store. Just a functional building. The recently renovated Fordham gym in the Bronx, while small has a unique style and feel about it.

Your Rider comment rings the truest too me. I enjoyed going to Alumni Hall to WATCH BASKETBALL more than AHY.

I continue to be unimpressed with the management of AHY. No terrorists are getting in, and if they do the ushers will spot on a time out. Half a season to fix a urinal, though.
