Subject: Stags come from behind and beat Siena

Looks like TOT found a core group of guys in the second half

Maxwell
Mamadu
MVS
Todd
Han

Watching the game, Mamadu's defense sparked the team's second half rally. Mamadu could have played more but got into foul trouble on some questionable calls. Max and Mamadu were the keys to the win. Han made a huge play at the end of the game. TOT decided to foul when Siena was up 3 with 8 seconds left and there were chants of "TOT coach of the year."

Middleton played only 6 minutes but made two nice jump shots.

Bell continues to struggle and looked lost on the court.

MVS had an off shooting night but made key free throws down the stretch.

Big game on Saturday as we need all the wins we can get before the make or break road trip.

Surprised you didn't mention that the coach of the year played Carter 19 minutes which produced 0 points and 1 rebound. Also his defense was not good. I cannot understand the minutes he is getting.

I agree with you. I would like to see Carter's minutes go to Middleton. Carter came in the second half only becuase Mamadu was in foul trouble.

soup stated,

I also like Geoff Middleton - he's a mirror image of James Clinton - same build, same gait. James was a little more talented, but Middleton had a couple of finishes that were very good.

soup is an objective Siena at last night game. He is yet another outsider seeing the talent in Geoff. Geoff deserves more minutes. Just as Max thrived playing the PF position next to Gai, I suspect Max would similarly thrive next to Geoff. While everything depends on matchups, I would love to see TOT experiment with the following lineup.

PG - Han
SG - Todd
C - Middleton
PF - Maxwell
SF - Mamadou

I think Carter's minutes should go to Mamadou and Middleton, as he is stuggling, and Mamadou is coming on. But what happened in this game was that Mamadou took Middleton's minutes, as I think the strategy had to be that we had to match Siena's quickness and agressiveness off the boards. Carter got 3 rebounds, Middleton was the one with a single rebound.

Going forward I think Max, Mamadou and Middleton should be the main rotation, and only use Carter if we need more strength, agressiveness, or quickness that Middleton cannot provide. IMO, Carter offers the exact style of game that Max and Mamadou does...... the big difference is that Carter is just not as talented as those two, so he really should be behind both of them because Max and Mama can do everything Carter can do and more. Middleton offers totally different strengths which come with his height and long arms. IMO, TOT has to use Middleton where it makes sense because of the matchups.

Wow. At the start of the season Middleton was barely a D-1 player according to many posters. TOT has oft been criticized for not developing players but here is Middleton blossoming before our eyes. We've seen him grow as a rebounder and a defender and now as a scorer. I think the minutes for him are just about right. TOT is rightfully bringing him along slowly. I'm not sure he's ready for more extended play; he still seems to get tired and a running style doesn't seem to suit him yet.

Last night was all about Max first and Mama second. Max really carried us in the second half and demanded double coverage down low. Mama is a beast and will be starting Saturday. Carter does play good defense and will be sharing backup minutes with Geoff.

We're lucky to have Max back and Mama in the program.

how the heck can you say that, or that he out coached Fran Mac that is a stupid post. Kenny H was nursing a bad back injury that was not reported anywhere, so Siena was basically playing with 5 bodies the whole night, that kind of limits your flexibility. Lanier left the program a mess, with little time to rebound and replace the defections that he caused. What Fran has done with what he has available is pretty remarkable, had this game been in Albany it is likely the outcome is much different. Finally, is TOT moving FF forward or are you barely staying above water? Fran has momentum and it only gets better for Siena from here on out. Good luck the rest of the way, but stem your enthusiasm on TOT, there is a reason he still coaching in the maac.

I think Mcafferty has done a great job this year, and I think most people agree with that, especially under the circumstances. But we are talking about this game, and to suggest that that he properly prepared his team to play without Mensah for this game, is overlooking the problem that Siena became unglued, and it is the coaches responsiblity to not let that happen. Got beat on the O-boards and with with a lot of turnovers..... even though it seemed like a lot of that was due to Fairfield's better play, however.

And if you think that Hasbrouk is the only player on the court that had a bad back, a sicknness, or another injury then you are being naive.

IF the game was in Albany and
IF Mensah did not get hurt and
IF Hasbrouk did not have a bad back
IF Siena had more than 5 bodies ( I count 9 scholarship players)
IF .....

Then I agree the outcome might have been different.

they in truth only have 7 real scholarship type players, give it a rest, how would you prepare, or better yet, how would TOT?

Siena's coach has done a very good job with the personal he inherited. I think it is too earlier to judge him, I certainly think he looks to be a very solid coach.

The box score has middleton for only 6 minutes. I'm sorry, that's just not enough. Mamadou would have been available at crunch time if Middleton had gotten more minutes earlier in the game. Carter is nursing a sore shouldn't be seeing 19. Further he graduates soon. Middleton is with the program for 2 more years. Middleton scored 4 points in 6 minutes. He only had one rebound but he led the team in rebounds per minutes going into last nights game. He also led the team in blocked shots.

TOT is developing middleton. But I think he is being brought along too slowly for two reasons. He doesn't present the defensive personality TOT likes in practice and TOT feels loyalty to Carter. I love carter, but we need to put the best players on the court and Middleton has now surpassed carter in skill. TOT does not get my vote for Coach of the year because of the way he is giving out minutes, the way he lost the loyola game and the way he handled the final 8 seconds last night.

I think the reason Middleton did not get the normal minutes last night that he had been getting was based on matchups, plain and simple. Siena was quicker and more athletic, and his talents were not as desired as against other teams. That said, I'm sure you will see a lot more of him in the future (minutes based on matchups), as he is continuing to improve!
