Subject: Fairfield To Be Featured On ESPN's Pride Of The Program On 12/30

So if ESPN is going to show one of the most important moments in Men's Basketball History..... which one should they choose. I would say it comes down to 2

- Stags win over Marshall in the 73 NIT
- AJ Wynder's last second shot to tie MAAC championship game which we eventually won in OT in 86

Good choices but I might pick the 77/78 Holy Cross game (HC was top 20 team at the time)or the Terry O'Conner/ Pete DeBisshop win over UConn except I don't think either of those victories are on tape anywhere. Don't be surprised if its the North Carolina tourney loss. ESPN has the tape on that one!

I'd say Mitch running on the court. Doesn't that really sum up the program's history?

Mike Aldridge missing a layup to win a game that went four overtimes, Mark Young called for a blocking foul at half court vs Florida with 12 seconds left up three and we lose in OT, Hank Foster driving through the tennis courts and being suspended, Owen Mahorn being Owen Mahorn. What could have been but never was! We still love our Stags!

Shannon Bowman crying genuine tears of joy after the Stags came from last place to win the MAAC Tourney and a date with UNC.

btw: Aldridge missed a layup versus Iona in a game that went FIVE overtimes (not four). I can't still see that one as if it was yesterday. What would have been a great victory turned into one of the worst losses in what was an incredible game.

Another game that has to be rated right up there, even though historically it is not as significant, was our victory over St John's on the Redman's home court where they rarely lost. At the time, and with St John's sporting a full roster, an NIT championship, it was very significant, and rates up there with the excitement, of the UCONN, Holy Cross, Marshall, and teh MAAC Championships. It also got huge coverage in NYC, and quite a bit nationally.

I think the worst loss was vs Florida, and I think the scenario was we were up 3 with 2 seconds to go and we had the ball in our end of the court...... and there was no 3-pointer back then. But we threw it in, Mark Young fouled, they hit the first FT, missed the 2nd, and tapped it in. All we had to do was hand the ball to Florida and we would have won.

Trivia Question; When AJ Wynder hit his game tying last second shot vs Iona in the MAAC tourney. Who threw the ball inbounds to him, and did Iona put a defender in front of the the player that inbounded the ball??????

This one is probably not on tape. How about the Mike Branch/Pat Burke/ Jim Brown team of the sixties which beat Bob Cousy in his debut game as coach of nationally ranked Boston College. This contest had nationwide pregame publicity.

JS, this is late, because I just noticed the trivia question, but the answer is TOT who threw the ball in, and I don't think he was guarded. Another great game (unfortunately a loss), came in I think 1967 (George Bisacca's last game). St. Bonnies, undefeated, rated number 1, and Billy Jones at the foul line with a chance to tie with two free throws in the final seconds, but he missed. This was played at the old New Haven Arena.

NASHVILLE,
The Bonnies were 22-0 at the time and were ranked #2 after UCLA. Bob Lanier with size 22 sneakers led them. Billy Jones was on the line for 3 foul shots (technical foul assessed), made only 2. We lost in double OT by a point. Wasn't the game up at Bonaventure??

STAGAL, the game was definitely in New Haven, but I will defer to you on the other points of fact (once you reach retirement age, some things become a little fuzzy). But my question for you is this (since I wasn't at game), why was a technical assesed at that point in the contest?

Nashville,
Can't remember the specifics about the technical. Like you, that was a long time ago. I listened to the game on WICC. I know Jones had a chance to tie if he made all 3 foul shots. He made the first 2, and missed the 3rd. I'll never forget how close we came to beating the 2nd ranked and undefeated team in the US. We had some great teams under Bisacca. If we could only duplicate that today.........

stagal

ROME, Bridgeport, Stag Basketball-----
someone once said " what once was, will it ever be again "

all i can remember is Billy Jones looking up at the rim,-----
Aldrich putting the ball on the front rim and it rolled back, not in--
the inbound by loyola will rank up there with Pearl Harbor---
the 2 best were the Holy Cross rout at alumni
and the shot by AJ to tie vs Iona for MAAC championship,
its amazing that TOT was involved with one of the best and one of the worst. he is now a major part of Stag history.
