In reply to: RayS 's message, "Re: Men's Lax selected in Top-20 in Pre-season Poll" on 01:46:27pm 12/22/05 Thu,

While I love that the lacrosse team is good, we need to realize that there are only 50 D-1 lacrosse teams in the nation. Being #20 is similar to being ranked #140 in hoops.

Also, Fairfield is the type of school that should be good in lacrosse. It's really not popular west of the Mississippi and the demographic of a person that plays lacrosse is the same as that of a student interested in Fairfield as a school. Also, the breakdown of where our students are from (Long Island, Westchester, CT, MA, etc) is where the best lacrosse players are from.

Don't get me wrong, it's great for the school, but we need to realize that being in the top 40% is not THAT great of accomplishment.

Go Stags.

StagNation,

Thank you for your encouraging words and analysis. Would the fact that the Stags finished last season ranked #15 or by your methodology in the 26.7% (15/56, there are actually 56 DI teams) be a more impressive accomplishment in your eyes? Let's keep in mind that the talent pool is not as large as basketball so we are competing in small more competitive universe as a result.

Stago,
I'm not trying to rain on any parade, not trying to be a negative here. It's a great accomplishment to be ranked in the nation in any sport. However being ranked #20 or even #15 when you're drawing from 56 schools, is not that great.

We lost 23-4 vs. Duke last year, when we were ranked 15. I'm thinking that our current basketball squad, ranked 270 of 330(ish) would put up a better fight against a top team.

Again, it's better to be #20 than #45, but let's keep this in perspective.

If there are only 56 or 60 DIV I lacrosse teams, then does that mean there are more DIV II and DIV III teams, in which case even having a DIV I program is quite an accomplishment ?

Therefore, out of a thousand + four year universities and colleges in the nation, having a ranked lacrosse team is a
great accomplishment. Congratulations to them.

Stagnation, you are absolutely right in your assessment. For years I lived in Wilton, Ct. My kids went to the high school here. Each year the school would unfurl a new state championship lacrosse banner and make a big fuss about it. I always chuckled when this happened. What was rarely mentioned was that all Wilton had to do was to beat New Canaan to win that championship. The sport was not state sanctioned because there were not enough schools participating (you needed at least 25) and those that did participate did not know a lacrosse ball from a soccer ball(Except for Wilton and New Canaan). Contrast that with Cross Country in this state where no fewer than 150 schools field teams. Just telling it like it is. Having said that Good Luck to the Stags.

More telling it like it is:
George Carlin says it's not a sport, it's a "faggot college activity".
I like the game, but in pecking order, i'd place it far down the NCAA line.
I'd rank the sports:
1)BCS Leagues Football
2)Basketball
3)
4)
5)
6)
7)
8)Non-BCS League D-1 football
9)Baseball
10) Everything Else

Nice guys, very nice...we finally have a winning sports program at Fairfield and you decide to knock it down and put it in its proper place. I don't understand the mentality. Maybe we do deserve to have a mediocre athletics programs, afterall we seem to have difficulty embracing success.

guys - go to a lacrosse game on campus! They're awesome; the students are rowdy, there's tailgating and they get A+ opponents to come to campus. I am with the Phile here, guys. It is a SIGNIFICANT accomplishment for the program, one that the others SHOULD USE as a model of success...

ANY Stag sport that gets national recognition should make us all feel proud, not just the team but alumni, students and the school. Who really cares if someone has to "put into perspective" so we can all understand it better? Nationally ranked is still better than not nationally ranked last time I looked. I would guess that a lot of Div 1 Lax teams would like to be Fairfield and beaten the teams that we beat.

Why do the Lax home games get such a rowdy student turnout? Is it that it is "home" on the campus(Alumni Hall vs. AHY), is it more fun because of the tailgating, is it because they are successful, is it more fun and exciting than b-ball for the students, is it just easier for the students to get to? Should the AD, SID and the promtion people looked into all this including the LAX parent's website to find out why and maybe apply this towards b-ball if appicable?

I think what is signigicant about this Top-20 ranking is that we got it without even playing a game...... thats what happens to Big schools all the time, they get respect. Why did we get this respect????? Certainly from our accomplishments, but also because of the league we play in. We could not have got this type of pre-season recognition if we were still in MAAC Lacrosse.

I would agree that being top 20 in Lacrosse is probably as signifant as being top 100 in Basketball, but that isnt really the point. This Lacrosse team has made major strides over the years, with great accomplishments on the field and strategically positioning themselves in leagues (GWLL and ECAC) to get them in this position. IMO, this league shiftingnhas been a big benefit for the Stags.

And now tht we are in a very good league, we can do what all big schools do in Basketball
- play all the tough games in conference
- schedule easy OOC teams at beginning of the season to build a nice record
- and have recruits come to you door step because you play in a high level league

And this ranking was not just accomplished from last years results, it has been a result of many fine seasons. Just to put this in persepctive of what level the team is at now...... here is aquote from the year 2000 on our Lacrosse team. "Fairfield is currently 28-1 all-time in MAAC play, winning every MAAC title since the league's inception in 1996". I guess that our 28-1 MAAC record was not impressive back in 2000, as we were never in Top-20.

I think students or anybody will show up if its a big game and a meaningfull game.... no matter what the sport. The difference with Lax is that it has played a lot of Big games because they have been good and been playing teams like Notre Dame in critical contests. But students have shown up for Soccer, W-volleyball vs Notre dame a few years ago, and Womes's Hoops senior night for Strumpf and Tapley, and Men's hoop games vs Manhattan and NIT-BC.

On campus surely helps, but Lax also had games last year where they drew 54 and 79 fans.
