Very physical and sloppy game.... lots of fouling, but Stags hanging in there as Stags have been up 5, while Cal Northridge's biggest lead was 3.

Max - 8 pts
Todd - 7
MVS - 5

We sound like a normal team with o-boards, a dunk, inside scoring, and some good "D". 15 FT's is a good sign. But our shooting has gone in the toilet.... probably less thatn 30%, and only 1 three pointer (MVS).

Sounds like we are going to have to "win ugly"

[> [> [> 3 great plays by Todd in last 35 secs -- JoeStag, 12:24:17am 12/31/05 Sat, [1]

We are down 1 and the following happens

- Todd steals and lays it in for Stag 1 point lead
- Todd hit game winner with 4 ticks
- Todd knocks ball loose for Cal Northidge to assure win

Makin plays. We now got some inside horses with Max. Mamadou played aggessive, but rusty.

Max 13pts, 6 rebs..... nice for first game back.

Bell 2 big threes in 2nd half

Middleton a solid game 4pts, 6 rebs in 18 minutes

I feared the team might go in the tank after the recent bad losses. Nice to see that didn't happen. This victory gives renewed hope that they might be competitive in the MAAC.

Looks like it was a strange game.

The Stags, who couldn't get to the FT line all season ... shoot 35 FT's.

Han, who is lauded as our best PG in years ... has 0 assists.

Maxwell, who hasn't played in months ... goes 4-4 FG and 5-6 FT.

Northridge's (and one of the country's) leading scorer Efervbeha (sp?) ... scores only 4 points.

Northridge draws only 697 to the game. And you think Stag attendance is bad?

Nice win and the right time.

Stagman, certainly a much different game than any game this year..... almost like a game last year. Some comments on your comments:

- thats 35 FT's and they were not even fouling us intentianally, as the game was close throughout.

- Han only 22 minutes and stuggled with a few turnovers. Last year, Cal Northridge was very effective on trapping our players with a couple of tall guys, especially Goode. It sounded like they did the same with Han as they tipped a lot of passes. Han did make some nice passes, but obviously they must of resulted us in getting FT's and not hoops.

- Great stats by Max for 1st game back, but opening sequence of game really set a good tone. Max wins opening tap, Han misses jumper, and Max grabs the O-board and puts it right back for 2. Also a dunk bu Max..... thats what we have been missing.

- Efervbeha did not start because of coaches punishment, however, he played the 2nd half and Cal Northridge built a 8 point lead, but we still shut him down with 1-9 shooting the last 20 minutes.

- Northridge has an enrollment of over 33,000, larger than UCONN. 697 is very low .

What a great game for Max. Nice games too from Alvin and Middleton, who seems to be getting better by the game. Tough shooting night for the guards. Sounded like MD had lots of rust. I have to think Todd is going to break out in a big way after last night.

Much needed, tough gritty win. Huessler stated several times on the broadcast that Cal. St. Northridge had not lost a Home OOC game since the 2001/2002 season. Nice momemtum for Thursday night against Siena. And by the way the dunkless streak is over. Max had one in the first half.

I think we matched their defensive intensity and physicallness..... thats what was needed on the road. Players got to feel good that they won it in a tough gritty fashion.

The announcers said that Diakhate was very active on the boards, but it seemed like he was rusty hanking on to the ball. Han threw him a great pass and mamadou was not expecting it..... and turned it over.

Mamadou anmd Middleton might get more time as Carter went down and out with a shoulder injury. Carter was in a lot pain, but no diagnosison the radio. I think both Middleton and Carter played better with Max next to them.
If we can get those type of numbers from Middleton (4pts, 5 rebs 1 block in 18 minutes), then he should be starting.

I was at the game last night. Regarding the attendance, remember that school is not in session right now. But they play in a facility that is smaller than many of the Fairfield county high schools play in. It may only fit 2000 max.

Carter went down late in the second half with a shoulder injury. Action was stopped for maybe 5 -10 minutes. He came out of the locker room before the game was over with his shoulder iced and his arm in a splint.

Malibu,

The Webcast said that we had good defensive intensity, but they also said both teams were sloppy in the 1st half. Since you were there live, wWas our defensive intensity good, or was Cal Northridge just sloppy.

It sounded over the webcast that there were some stag fans there, as I heard applause whenever something good happened for the Stags.

Honestly, I would call both teams sloppy. With the small gym and the level of play this game really had the feel of a high school game, rather than divison I college.

I guess it was fair to say that Fairfield's defensive intensity was good, despite Northridge's sloppy play. That's probably why they won. I didn't look at a boxscore but it appeared that Fairfield was outrebounded pretty badly. Their lack of size is going to hurt. Thank god for Middleton. At least he belongs in the middle at this level but he's really the only one.

With attendance of 697 there weren't that many fans of either team there. I could see a few people in Fairfield shirts sitting behind the bench as well as what looked to be a couple players' families. But if I had to estimate the number of Fairfield fans there I would say maybe 30 or so. If you heard their applause over the radio they must have been loud.

Just got back home from the game last night. I agree with Malibu Jim re: defensive intensity, it also helped that they do not have anyone who seemed comfortable playing thepoint. A lot of bad passes. Their top scorer Efevberha played only about 5 mins. in the 1st half. In the 2nd half he got fouled & either got poked in the eye or had a problem with a contact. In fact after being attended to on the bench for about 4-5 mins, ibelieve Heard had to take his foul shots for him. He appeared to have problems with his vision for a while after he came back in the game.

That said it seems the addition of Max & Mamo helped the defense. We had trouble only when they took out their "big guy" Shewmate & put in Chitwood & Heard together. With those 2 in they looked a little quicker & more athletic. Fortunately They went back to Shewmate who was a real stick.

The worst part of our game was the offense. They didn't score for almost 5mins. of the first half & we could only manage 4 pts. 2 of those were free throws. Han looked like a freshman last night, but played decently. I think the lack of assists may be attributable to the fact that CSUN was overplaying the 3 pt. line I guess figuring they didn't have to worry about our inside game. That certainly worked to Max's advantage.

As for Carter it looked like he suffered a slight shoulder seperation. He came back out in a sling, but didn't seem to be in a lot of pain, hope he's ok he plays with a lot of heart.

Ray,

Thanks for the report. I was wondering about Mamadou's defense. Did he play similar to Max on defense combining athleticism, physicalness and agressiveness to overcome a lack of height. Or is he more like Carter and Middleton, who have the physical attributes, but might not have the athletcism and quickness.

IMO, a combo of a tall Middleton plus an athletic forward is usually is what is needed to matchup defensively with most of our opponents.

Mamadou only played a few minutes but I think he will prove to be an overall better player then Carter. No knock on AC but I think M brings more athleticism & is a little quicker. He should help offensively also. In any event he may have a chance to prove himself early on with the injury to AC.

By the way I might also mention that Han seemed to get a little tentative as the refs called him on a couple of charges, one of which appeared questionable at best.
