I like Diane, but the programs is right now would be ranked 4th in the state - that is unacceptable.

I think playing in the arena really hurts the chemistry of the team. Better at a smaller venue. I think they do better on the road.

I think Alumni Hall would be perfect for the Women..... they lost a lot when they moved out. I think even the biggest Women's fans want them back at Alumni Hall, and I consider myself a Fairfield Women's hoop fan.

Agree, we are probably the 4th best team in the State, if that. I assume you rate Sacred Heart ahead of us. However, if played them then we would know for sure.

I say it's time to dust off the Alumni Hall plans and invest in creating a the envisioned bowl design. I consider Alumni Hall to be a historical landmark and should not be torn down. Take a look at this picture of the new Bucknell basketball arena with the bowl design. I believe it holds about 4,500 fans and would be perfect for Fairfield.

I agree. Get them back to an improved Alumni Hall. Let's have a first rate home court advantage and venue for Women's Basketball, Volleyball and concerts. The plans were made available before AHY and they looked pretty good back then. Unless we turn into a UCONN, I doubt if we will ever need a 6,000 seat arena. Also why would they play a single game at AHY when the only time they seem to draw at home is at a double header and even then most Fairfield fans don't get there until just befire the Men's game.

I had a short conversation with Fr. von Arx at the St Joes Pregame reception, and I asked him about the plans for Alumni Hall.

He said no decisions have been made, but it would be more likely that Alumni Hall would be torn down and replaced with a new structure. The current structure is old, and is not easily upgraded. There are 2 issues: (1) while its being torn down and rebuilt, the current athletic and club teams that use it, would have to look for another facility, and (2) the old bowl design that was proposed had a maximum capacity of only 2,300 because of zoning restictions.

An Option I would like to see is to build a new Alumni Hall at another location and then turn Alumni Hall into a Parking Garage. The new arena should be 4,000.

Women should move back on campus, I think most everyone wants that, and would more likely go to games there. The had a great following at Alumni Hall.

Let's hope a decision can be made soon so as not to sign another 5 year contract with AHY for the women. Does anyone know why out of 12 home games at AHY the women play 5 single games there this year? Is this do to scheduling problems or did the Athletic Department really think that they could draw good numbers. It has to be very expensive just to open and staff AHY for one night with less than 1,000 fans. I think that you are right that most people think the women belong back on campus but does the Administration feel this way? They did have a good following both locally with youth groups and students plus being so close to the action made it an exciting place for the fans.

I do not not truely know what each administrator thinks, but I do know that Fairfield has shown to be emtremely supportive of Title IX issues...... supportive to a fault.

I am supportive too, but I still feel women are better off in Alumni Hall.

My guess is within the year, a decision is made on Alumni Hall. Plans will take a year to be developed and approved and 2 years to build. 4 years from now is my guess when we might have a new facility..... at the earliest.

I was at the game last night and, although we showed flashes of brilliance, Hartford is clearly a much better team. Rizzotti has them playing very well. I think the young Stags will win their share of MAAC games this year. Keep in mind, Hartford beat Manhattan, blew out Rider by 30 before beating us last night - they are a legit NCAA team.

As for the Arena, I am torn. I think they would draw better and have a more intimate atmosphere in Alumni Hall, I like the AHY. Better facilities and beer....

It might be a non sequitir, but Coach Nolan had 4 losing seasons in 22 at Alumni Hall and has had 4 straight losing seasons since moving to the Arena.

It is interesting that the fortunes of the lady stags have been on a downward spiral since the ladies started to play their games in Bpt. Has the coaching profession left Diane behind? Could this be the cause? As for me I would be much more inclined to watch if they were at Alumni Hall. No way do I go to Bpt. unless the team is part of a doubleheader with the men.

The women barely draw whether it be at Alumni or the Arena. I agree the lack of suppport is magnified by the size of the Arena. If you want to say that Hartford was on more more of a neutral court than a home court, then fine, but its no excuse to get BLOWN OUT by them. The score was 41-16 at the half. Diane deserved a pass for a year or two based off prior successes, but this is 4 years now.

Rizotti has done a great job up at Hartford. I think this is her 5th year. The basics of her recruiting is to get good kids who can come in and be an upgrade over the seniors who are leaving. Next year she has Diana delva coming in from Westhill in Stamford. She is a 6'1 center who averaged 22 rebounds per game last year as a junior. She wanted to stay local and was offered and took official visits to Fairfield,Sacred Heart,Northeastern & Hartford. Her mother desperately wanted her to choose Fairfield so her family can go to all the games. She chose Hartford due to the type of kids on the team (that was the reason she stated in the Advocate). She says the coaching staffs were all good. Hartford also has a transfer sitting out this year named Lisa Ettiene who played for Brian McMahon in Norwalk. She played her freshman year at Penn St and will be the best player on their team next year. I wonder if Fairfield had gone after Amanda Pape at Sacred Heart. This Stamford resident has been incredible for them. I also figured they would be in the mix for the Coombs triplets that were from Trumbull and ended up at Fairliegh Dickenson this year. One of the 3 was a walk-on.

Agree with most of what you say, but:

1 - Not sure Ettiene will be the best player on the team next year. A little slow and possibly over-rated. Have to figure Witt as next year's star.

2 - The Coombs triplets would not help Fairfield. They are seeing little or no time at an inferior FDU.

Bob,

You might be correct about Etienne but as of now...in practice...she has been dominant.

Next years best players will be Beverly and Hood if Etienne is not....though freshman Sheaffer will have a lot to say about that.

Regarding the Coombs triplets...I was basically curious if Fairfield had recruited them...too bad they are not doing much at FD as they are a great story.

Do you know if Fairfield was involved with Pape??

Isbal, I defer to you as to UHart's next year's team. I just happen to like Witt a lot.
Don't know if FU was involved with Pape, but I would certainly hope so.
FU may have had feelers out with one or maybe two of the Coombs, but they were intent on playing together. FU had no need or room for all three.
OT - How's Adeleke doing? As a Hofstra grad and season ticket holder, I'm very familiar with his game. Think he just wore out his welcome.

[> [> [> [> [> Evaluation of Talent -- JoeStag, 08:59:27pm 12/07/05 Wed, [1]

I think the biggest thing that has to be questioned is our evaluation of talent.

We have signed most of our Women in the early signing period, meaning that we got the players we wanted..... but many of the players are not up to the talent of some of the top MAAC schools.

So this example of 6-1 Diana Delva choosing Hartford over Fairfield is a good as a few weeks before she verballed, we got a verbal from 6-1 Tara Flaherty who had similar stats (19pts, 16rebs nad 4 assists) as Delva.

Who is better of the 2 Girls????? I have no idea, but hopefully coach Nolan does, and that she focused on getting the right player. But its hard to beleive that we always picked the right players the last 4 years

Bob- Regarding Hofstra...They lucked into a real good find of another CT kid that left CT....Giddens...I think she is a junior now but she has really grown.

Adeleke- Obviously he had his problems with Pecora. The incident that was the final straw is not for internet fodder and purely speculation. I have met him on numerous occasions and have been impressed with his demeanor. He's actually majoring in phsychology which is somewhat of a paradox. As a baller....it is a pleasure to get his stats(20 pts 10 rbd) at the 5 position, which is quite rare (Hartford hasn't had those 5 stats since Vin Baker). His negatives are still the same as they were in Hoftsra...poor free throw shooter(though better rotation now)...not great hands...many points are off own misses...turnovers...though he has learned so far to stay out of foul trouble. Wish we had him for more than 1 year.He still keeps in touch with his Hoftstra buddies.

The AE misses you guys...though the CAA is definately a big step up in most sports. It will be interesting to see what happens after the next conference (Big east will lead the way) implosion in a couple of years.

Bob- By the way Hofstra has signed Sam Brigham 5-10 G from Simsbury CT for next season. In today's Hartford Courant.."Can not only run an offense, but can also be a pest on defense"
