Subject: Early Look at Loyola

Loyola is not the same team as in the past. Ther 4-0 speaks for itself, as it proves they know how to win. However looking deeper into their schedule, its really hard to tell how good they really are. Some of their wins:

- @Towson by 13, who is 3-2 and their biggest win was UMBC
- UMBC by 7 , who is 2-3 and their biggest win was over Delaware , who has lost 5 in a row.
- American by 8, who is 0-6 and beat by George Mason by 40
- Mt St Mary's by 5 , who is 1-4, and their only win was vs Binghampton

While their wins have not been against impressive teams, they are wins, and thats something we have not been able to do a lot of..... even though our schedule is significanly tougher. Should really be a good game that will tell how good each team is at this point.

Lot of difference in Loyola Players too. The 6-11 Corrigan is not on the Roster, One of their best players Charlie Bell has not played this year, dand former starter Brad Farrell is only playing 9mpg. The team is dominated offensively by 6-0 Sr. guard AndreCollins who transferred from Maryland. His fills up a stat sheet, 20.5ppg, 4 rebs, 17assists and 15 turnovers in 4 games. He has taken twice as many 3-pointers than each of his teammate have taken shots. None of his teammates have made more than 2 three-pointers He has shot 72 times overall (18/game), and the rest of the starters have shot only about 23 times a piece. Needless to say, how we defend him is importtant.

Loyola has a pair of 6-7 players up front in Michael Tuck and Josko Alujevic. They both seem solid as they each average about 10ppg, 7rpg, and shooting over 55%. Most of their players have good FG%..... except for Collins at 39%, but overall they have shot pretty good. Hinds, James, and Stanback all range in height from 6-1 to 6-4 as they play the 1, 2 or 3.

This will be the first team that we played this year that has a dominate guard, it will be interesting to see if we put a "stopper" on him, and if we do, who would that be?????? Or do we stick with a team defense approach that we have showed for most of the year.

well, who is our fastest defender?! I think Collins would blow by Bell (arguably one of our better defensive players) with his quickness. I would think Todd. Put Todd on Collins, one on one and see if Todd can stick with him. From seeing the team this year, I think little Herbie is our quickest player but he is only a frosh and may not be up to the task of defending Collins...

Sound's like a box and one or match up zone should do the trick. Collins sounds like he loves to fire at will, so let him, but make him do it from further out than he likes.

The defensive scheme must be focused on shutting down Collins. Teams have been successful in mounting second half comebacks against Loyola when they have focused their defensive energy on Collins. The rest of the team is limited offensively. Bell and MVS have no chance against Collins. Todd is our best option against Collins.

JS - FYI, Corrigan transferred to Adelphi, where he is averaging 5 pts and 10 minutes a game. He's listed as a 7'0" grad student.

Wow, I thought Corrigan would have been very good this year. Sounds to me he is more focused on academics or other things.

[> Defending Collins and Loyola -- JoeStag, 09:11:12pm 12/07/05 Wed, [1]

Since I hace not seen Collins play, its difficult to determine what his strength are. But from a 39% shooting percentage, I would think that we would want to play him straight up and hopes he chucks up at lot at 39%.

The other Loyola players have shot well, so that tells me that we cannot cheat off them to help on Collins.

I would love to see Todd be the man that becomes a lock-down defender, but the problem has been that his strength has not been as a defender in the past. Certainly he has the tools to be a very good defender, but maybe he has not had the focus on "D".

IMO, now that we don't have to rely so much on Todd for offense, maybe Todd can focus more on "D". As a senior, he should see that need on this team, and fullfill that role.

Beyond Collins we need a player that can "D" up a Burtt, Clark, Downey, and Xavier.

the talent level of loyola has improved overall, even if you don't consider collins. patsos has had two recruiting classes now and has completely turned over the players on the roster, and they actually have some depth too. his antics on the sidelines is to get his team to play harder and with an additude and that was noticable last year. i do not think we will take them for granted but we are playing a full team with maac talent and not just collins.
