Stags Hockey Sweep Weekend Contests

http://www.fairfieldhockey.net/

The Stags took to the ice twice this weekend and came away with huge wins against NJIT and Albany to move into sole possession of 2nd place in the MCHC's Central Division, still just 4 points behind Fordham.

The fans came out in numbers Saturday night as Fairfield easily disposed of visiting NJIT 12-1. Rallying behind the rowdy student section, sophomore Mike Aylward opened the scoring barrage just :50 seconds into the game and the Stags never slowed down. Fellow sophomore Justin Eisner recorded a hat trick in the first period alone, while senior Mike Chaconas added 2 goals of his own.

Senior Mike Tirelli, junior Paul Connors, and sophomore Ben Welch also found the back of the net for Fairfield as the Stags finished off the Highlanders and sent their fans home happy. Fairfield outshot NJIT by a 48-1 margin.

Just twelve hours after Saturday night's victory, the Stags found themselves boarding a bus for the long road trip to face the 5th ranked Albany Great Danes in a Sunday afternoon contest. If the Fairfield players felt any "jetlag" from the trip, it certainly didn't show, as the Stags man handled the Great Danes on their own ice and sent them to the locker room with a 7-2 defeat. Albany had not lost a regular season game in the last two seasons.

The day belonged to the seniors as Mike Chaconas led the offense with four goals and goalie Ryan Hull anchored the defense with his 34 saves.

Sophomores Mike Aylward and Justin Eisner also contributed with a goal each, and junior Chris D'Ariano recorded his first point of the season when he blew a slapshot past Albany goalie and reigning MCHC MVP, Frank Guiffre.

The win was monumental for the 9th ranked Fairfield squad who has now rung off eight straight wins. The Stags look ahead to a crucial matchup against 3rd place Columbia on December 3. Game time is set for 8:30 PM at the Wonderland.
