Stags played with tremendous amount of heart. A lot of fun to watch Carter and the 4 guards battle a Big East team. Short-handed in height & talent, they stayed in the game with a truly inspired effort. Following up the disaster with St Joes, TOT did a great job in getting the team ready to play tonight. Kudos to TOT and the team for a job very well done.

The only down side was Middleton. Several fans wondered why he didn't start with MOS out. He showed in his few minutes exactly why. Team much better with Carter at center. - Says a lot, doesn't it?

I went to the game. The team that played tonight would go undeated in Maac play. The team that played last Monday would go 0-18. I hope we see the hustle, passing, defense and aggressive play we say tonight from the stags for the rest of the season. Win or lose a team that plays like this will be fun to watch. And a team that plays like this will win more than they lose.

[> [> Observations on tonights game -- Reindeer Fan, 12:04:23am 11/29/05 Tue, [1]

I can't believe I'm saying this but I think the stags actually outplayed the Friars. There were more than just a few questionable charge calls on Todd. There were a couple of terrible out of bounds calls where the ball went off providence and yet providence retained possession. Providence was awarded a continuation on a foul where the shot was let go 3 steps and about 5 seconds after the foul. There was one official that absolutely killed Fairfield tonight. Every bad call I saw came from this one official.

That being said, the stags are now 0-3. Still I feel much better about this team than I did a week ago. My expectations are more in line with what I thought going into the season. Here are my thoughts on tonights game.

1) Jon Han can flat out play. He is the best recruite in the Tim O'toole era. He lets the game come to him. He makes his shots. He doesn't turn the ball over.
2) Herbie Allen will develop into a good ball player. I liked what I saw tonight. He made a great steal and basket. He played his man a little better but is still a little slow on defense. He got stuffed badly on a 3 point shot. I think he will learn from these experience and develop into a smarter ballplayer. He looks to have the ability but perhaps not the experience playing against division one level talent.
3) MVS is still coming along but is still too tentative with his shot. Michael - when your open shoot the ball. Shoot it. Take the open three. Have some confidence. You can hit it. -- Still he was more agressive tonight than he was last week.
4) Olgesby proved he can play at this level and have a breakout game. He still forces shots on the inside too much when he is not open.
5) In my opinion, the number one reason why Fairfield lost tonight was that Terrance Todd forced too many shots on the inside in the final 5 minutes of the game. Yes he was hacked. Yes, he didn't get the calls. But he should never have been taking those shots to begin with. I think he went 0-5 down the stretch including a charge and 4 shots that were blocked or altered. He was forcing things rather than passing to an open man.
6) Michael Bell should not shoot the ball in the first 5 minutes of the game. He should be the number one option at the end of the game. Is it me or does Bell hit 80% of his shots in the last 10 minutes of the game and 20% in the first 5 minutes? That seems to be the pattern every game I watch. If the game is on the line, Michael Bell is the one player I want taking the shot. His 40 foot three pointer near the end and Hans 25 footer were almost enough.
7) Carter. Once again he played as hard as you could want and did more with less. He even hit a three pointer as the stags were mounting a final charge. If his inate abilities matched his heart he'd be all conference.
8) Marty O is hurt. I'd like to see this new look offense with him in the mix rather than carter. Carter had a lot of open looks from the outside that Marty is more likely to hit. I also think Marty is a better passer. I'd like to see him in as part of this offensive set. I hope Marty was watching Alvin play tonight though. Alvin showed how to stay active on offense and how to move without the ball. Geoff and Marty take notes.
9) Why didn't FU run this offense the first two games? This is what I expected to see. Good ball movement. Good passing. Players moving without the ball. Open three point shots.
10) Geoff Middleton is still a work in progress. Still, with Marty hurt there is little question Geoff needs to play. I think TOT made a mistake not getting him a few more minutes last season.

There are no moral victories, this was another tough lose. Still this lose gives everyone much more cause to be optimistic. This kind of play will win ball games
