In reply to: Pitt Stag Fan 's message, "Georgetown, Providence, Villanova" on 02:10:44pm 11/30/05 Wed,

This has long been my hope but if it happens soon Fairfield is not is a strong position to capitalize. Stags are in a conference which is minimally two tier and maybe three tiers below the Big East. Providence, Saint Johns, Seton Hall, Georgetown and Villanova will probably stay together if the big east does break up. BC is not in this group because they are no longer in the big east and because they have a serious commitment to football. So if a new league is formed they have a foundation of 5 teams and we are looking at 3 to 7 openings for other teams to come in. I would think strong A-10 teams would get first consideration. After that weaker teams from the A-10 and strong teams from the patriot league and Maac might be considered. I imagine the following schools are above Fairfield in the Pecking order

1) Saint Joe's (the most logical choice) Philly
2) Manhatten (Consistantly better program) NYC
3) Fordham (A-10) NY
4) Holy Cross (Better program / Better tradition) MA
5) Siena (Potential draw at Pepsi arena) Albany
6) LaSalle Philly

7) Fairfield (CT)

Fairfield probably has an edge over St. Peters and Iona due to the arena at Harbor yard and due to the fact that they are the only logical Connecticut team. Still, I think Fairfield is toward the bottom of any list and it is only the arena, their location, size and Jesuit affilation that has them on the list at all.

At one time I envisioned the Maac Football league as the new major basketball conference. Schools like St. Johns, Fairfield, La Salle, Iona and Georgetown that were not committed to football joined the Maac football league and played in a non-scholarship type format. I felt these schools would ultimately get together for basketball because they had the same basic educational and atheletic philosophy. That group has completely disbanded in part because Fairfield walked away from football. I think this group should have been positioning to stay together for the long term, and Fairfield made a strategic mistake by giving up football.

Any new league might want a team from each major east coast market, Mass, RI, CT, NYC, NJ, Philly, Delaware/Maryland and DC. And they might not want more than 2 team from anyone geography. I don't know what team from the Maryland area might be most likely but I would think Georgetown would not want to be an island. So Fairfield has a chance to be in a new league when it is formed but they are not anybody's first choice. If I'm providence, Saint Johns or Georgetown, why do I want to leave the big east to regularly play a team like Fairfield unless I have to?

Fairfield needs to win consistantly out of conference, be a top team in the Maac and start to draw 3500+ per game to be desired by any new conference. If the big east break-up that has been rumored for 20 years were to happen today, Fairfield would not be in a position to take advantage of it..

The Eastern Big East's "basketball only's" (PC, SJU, SHU, NOVA, G'TOWN) will call on their midwestern brethren, (Depaul, Marquette) and add 2 to 3 other schools to form the newly aligned basketball only conference. Best candidates would be Xavier, Temple, St.Joe's, Dayton, UMass, and URI. If Fairfield could ever get their act together you guys would be a strong candidate. Nice arena, great recruiting metro, and similarly aligned school to a majority of the conference.

Its a real long shot that we could ever be lined up with PC, SJU, SHU, NOVA, G'TOWN, Xavier, St Joes, Dayton, Marquette, St Louis

If we have any chance, we have to shoot to be aligned with Fordham, Holy Cross, Lasalle, Duquesne, St Bonnies, and some MAAC schools that want to increase their Budgets.

If these schools hook up with their midwestern brethren, Fairfield has no shot. If you include any two of the 5 teams you listed in any list, Fairfield doesn't make the cut.
