[> Four Stags selected MCHC All-Stars -- Stagophile, 11:56:02pm 12/01/05 Thu, [1]

Four Stags have been named to the MCHC All-Star Game. Senior's Mike Chaconas and Corey Carlson, Sophomore Justin Eisner and Graduate Student Mike Terilli will represent Fairfield University on the "Private School" team on January 14th, at the Pepsi Arena in Albany at 2:00 p.m., just prior to the Albany River Rats Game. The game will once again be Public Schools vs. Private Schools. Admission will be $10 per person and will also include admission to the River Rats game.

The Men's Hockey team is currently in its third year as a club program, playing in the Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference and the American Collegiate Hockey Association.

Despite being in only its third season, the program has fielded a championship caliber team in each of the past two seasons. Last year's team finished the regular season with a 12-2-1-1 regular season record, and fell just a game short of the MCHC championship. This season the team looks to be even stronger, as they return a solid core of young players.

The Stag's season begins in early September and runs right through to March, with a short hiatus for winter break. Aside from 16 MCHC league games, between 5 and 10 non league games are scheduled each year, including a preseason tournament, to assure the highest level of competition for the team. Practices range between two and three times a week at their home rink, Wonderland of Ice, located about 15 minutes from campus in Bridgeport, CT.

The club hockey team is one of the most popular sports that Fairfield has to offer its student spectators; as attendance at home games have been well in excess of 250 fans. Fan busses provide transportation to and from Wonderland for students.

The Fairfield admin and basketball team needs to wake up and learn a lesson from this. People will come out to watch in numbers if the team is successful! Plain and simple as that.

Stags Rally, Top Yale in OT

Senior Mike Chaconas tied the game with 50 seconds left in the third period and freshman Eddie Mazur won it in overtime, as Fairfield narrowly escaped disaster in a nonleague game against Yale Wednesday night. The win marks the 10th straight for the Stags, who trailed in a game for only the third time this season.

The match was a stalemate between the rival Connecticut schools for a large portion of the game, as neither team was able to make things happen offensively. The Bulldogs broke the scoreless tie early in the second period as they were able to convert on a 2 on 1 odd man rush.

With little offensive production from the Stags' forwards, sophomore goaltender Bill Dwyer was forced to carry the weight on his shoulders, and he did just that as he made several spectacular saves to keep Fairfield in the game. Dwyer finished with 22 saves on the night.

With just 50 seconds remaining in regulation, Chaconas danced around a sprawled out Yale goaltender and slid the puck just inside the far post to tie the score at one. A Yale penalty in the waning moments of the third period led to an ensuing power play for the Stags that would ultimately prove to be the deciding factor.

Thirty seconds in to the first overtime, with Fairfield still on the powerplay, freshman Eddie Mazur skated from end to end and and around the Yale goaltender to score the game winning goal.

Despite a lackluster performance, the Stags managed to come away with the victory and keep their winning streak in tact. Next up for the Fairfield squad is division rival, Columbia. The game should be one for the books for the Stags, as the Columbia team is coached by former Soviet Union superstar, Alexei Kasatonov. Game time is slated for 8:30PM at the Wonderland. Fan busses will shuttle from the Rec Plex starting at 8:00.

Great to hear that we have a team that is performing so well, even if it is on the Club level. Does the team receive any financial support from the university or do the players bear the burden of taking care of expenses?

Good financial support from the University. The best funded club sport. Kids also pay dues and supply most of the equipment, although not all. This is the level of hockey that Fairfield can and will be successful at.
