I was at the game tonight. This pretty much sums up the disappointing, embarassing and downright pathetic loss...

Men's Basketball Drops 72-41 Decision To Saint Joseph's In Home Opener: Todd Tallies 11 Points, Bell Adds 10 Markers For Stags

Nov. 22, 2005

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Four Saint Joseph's University players reached double figures to lead the Hawks to a 72-41 win over Fairfield University at the Arena at Harbor Yard. Terrence Todd and Michael Bell reached double digits for the Stags, netting 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Hawks started quickly and never looked back in the game. Saint Joseph's scored the game's first points on Chet Stachitas' jumper just 33 seconds into the game. Faifield tied the game when Alvin Carter hit a short jumper on its next possession. The visitors took control from the point, using an 18-7 run over the next eight minutes to take a double digit lead at 20-9.

Saint Joseph's never led by less than that 11-point bulge, building a lead as many as 18 points in the first half, 34-16, with 1:49 left in the opening period. Rob Ferguson made five of six field goal attempts in the opening 20 minutes for 10 points. Bell was Fairfield's top scorer in the half with seven markers.

The Hawks did not relent in the second half, opening the period with an 18-5 spurt that pushed the lead to 29 points at 52-23. Fairfield showed some lfe with a quick run to make the score 56-33 which included five points from Todd and a three-pointer from Bell. However, Saint Joseph's regained its composure and retook its 29-point lead with 5:48 left on the clock.

The Stags are off for the rest of the week, returning to action on November 28 when they host Providence College at the Arena at Harbor Yard. Game time is slated for 7:30 pm.

I can see both Max and MD starting when they are eligible. Marty is really a 3 and he can fight for time with Bell and Reedal. It's unfair really to put him at the 4/5 by himself. He's just not that kind of player.

The one ray of light, and it is a bright one, is Han. He is the real deal and may finish as one of our all-time guards.

Let's face it, though, it's never easy in the MAAC to recruit big men. Robbie was a work in progress for three years until he exploded as a senior, and he took a lot of criticism on this board until that time. Gai was an anomaly for us and the league, and NBA big man. And he too was criticized often here.

We can't call this a rebuilding year until we see what MD and Max can do together. But it may be a year to re-tool to get Middleton some minutes and watch the freshman grow.

In the meantime, we need a big man to sign with us.

I agree that when Max and Mamadou are eligible they both might have to start. We need both height and athleticism in the frontcourt and unfortunately we do not have that in the same body. Middleton can give us the size but he currently does not have the athleticism. But right now Carter is not giving us much either. And it is very likely that Max and Mamadou will take a lot of Carter's PT.

Usually I never like to give PT to a player, just to learn on the job, but under the circumstances this first semester, it might have to be done with Middleton.

If the current make-up of the team was even a remote possibility last year, why in the world did Middleton not get any playing time whenever possible? No way he learns sitting every game, every minute on the bench. Given the current situation, throw him in and let him take his lumps.

I have been asking this questions since early last season. I don't care how bad he is - he cannot possibly be worst than Carter.
