Subject: Big Weekend in the MAAC

Friday

Iona improved to 2-0 by winning squeaker against Portland St., 81-75, despite being up by as much as 20 in the first half.

Siena fell to 0-2 by losing to Syracuse, 86-77. Considering their situation, a less than 20 point loss is respectable and might be indication that their new coach knows what he is doing.

Saturday

Six games are on tap and they are all tough ones. I see Niagara pulling off the upset. It will be interesting to see just how good BU is after their tough showing against Duke. Canisius should take the rivalry game that is getting alot of attention in the Buffalo area. George Mason just got spanked by Creighton so I am not sure what to expect against Manhattan. I know nothing about Delaware. And Iona is in for a tough one against Iowa. If Burtt and Soliver are on, then there could be an upset in the making and some positive press for the MAAC.

Niagara @ St. John’s (3:00 pm)
Boston Univ. @ Rider (3:00 pm)
Canisius @ St. Bonaventure (4:00 pm)
George Mason @ Manhattan (7:00 pm)
Delaware @ Marist (7:30 pm)
Iona @ Iowa State (9:00 pm)

And they are beating them on Iowa State's home court 87-72 with a minutes to go. This is a very impressive win..... I would say even bigger than their win over North Carolina 4 years ago, as that game was at a nuetral court at MSG, and UNC was a young team. Publicity wise UNC was a bigger win.

Congrats to the Gaels.

Marist over Delaware is a good win over the Colonial conference, a conference that we are close to in the RPI over the years. But Manhattan lost at home to George Mason another Colonial foe, so going 1-1 on your home courts vs Colonial is probably a disapointment.

Rider win over Boston U is good one, even though BU is 0-3 on the year. Rider is now 1-2 agisnt some tough mid majors. The A-East looks like they are coming back to reality after 2 year of some of their teams all being good at once (Vermont, BU, Northeastern). Vermont won their first game vs Wagner.

All MAAC teams have really upgraded their OOC schedule, and the teams that the MAAC plays in OOC probably rivals any league in the Northeast. Beating those teams consistently is another story, but at lest we play them. That has got to help in the long run.

That's a great win for Iona and the Rider and Marist victories are decent wins also.
