The Sunday Stamford Advocate Sports Section presented a piece which was not at all flattering to UConn and its handling of its recent problems with its two men players. In essence the writer said that Williams was given a pass because of his importance to the team while his teammate was not.

As a taxpayer in Connecticut, I don't believe that scholarships should be given to this kind of 'student' athelete. Is professionalism creeping into college sports? We need more stringent guidelines for the usr of taxpayer's $$$$$.

See the attached from the spin doctors on the UCONN board defending the hypocrisy of Calhoun and the entire program.

i never said it was moral, but he played by the rules. he also wasn't the only coach to do that. i'm not gonna bother with you again because i know your game on this board. but the bottom line is if you're going to complain about moral transgressions start with investigating whichever school you cheer for because I GUARANTEE there is something going on that shouldn't be. a relative of mine played college ball at Fairfield Univ which is a jesuit school (you may remember them from the year they lost to UNC by 12 in the tourney). They struggle to compete in their own sorry MAAC conference, and they got caught helping players cheat on exams. If you think for one second that the big boys with millions of dollars on the line don't do something in the moral grey area then you're naive and have a lot to learn in life. doesn't make it right, but it puts your never ending holier-than-thou arguments into perspective.

(Bad) business as usual for UConn's Calhoun

Oct. 31, 2005
By Gregg Doyel
CBS SportsLine.com Senior Writer

Connecticut stole a recruit from St. John's this week, and the sad part is, nobody's surprised.

UConn coach Jim Calhoun is a Hall of Famer and a champion, but when it comes to coaching, he is not a moral beacon of light. This is not a news flash.

"I hope the day comes when taxpayers can specifically designate where they want their personal tax dollars spent"

if that day were to come, UConn's athletic budget would increase by 500%

Thank you Stamford Advocate and CBS Sportsline..kudos. CT taxpayers have, like it or not, fueled the shameful UConn legacy of excess and winning at any cost. We have built UConn's sports palaces, elevated their coaches and players into celebrated royalty, only to see how elitist and arrogant they have become. UConn is the epitome of what is wrong with college athletics. The whiners from UConn defend this behavior and environment because deep down they know they can't obtain championships without it.

I hope the day comes when taxpayers can specifically designate where they want their personal tax dollars spent, i.e. indicate %'s allocated to each state department. It would never happen, of course, because the citizens wishes would be too apparent and then we wouldn't need politicians and lobbyists! Sorry to go off on a tangent but I'm sick of UConn.
