[> Fairfield Wins 2005 MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship -- Antman, 04:28:10pm 10/31/05 Mon, [1]

Fairfield University pulled off its second upset of the tournament today defeating Niagara University 2-1 to win the 2005 JetBlue Airways MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship and a berth to the 2005 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship.

The win gave Fairfield their fifth overall women’s soccer championship title and their first since 1999.

Niagara jumped off to an early 1-0 lead when Caitlin Long put in a goal off a pass from Christina Langrell at 21:10 into the game. In the game’s 35th minute, Fairfield’s Janna Breitenwischer put in a goal to even the score at 1-1, Breitenwischer’s goal was assisted by Alex Caram. In the second half Fairfield’s Ahna Johnson received a pass from Alex Caram that she put into the goal to give the Stags a 2-1 edge over the Purple Eagles, a lead that the Stags would never relinquish.

Fairfield’s goalkeeper, Brett Maron had seven saves, facing 14 shots today, while Niagara’s keeper, Owings faced eight shots and made four saves. Niagara finishes their season with an overall record of 16-3-2 and a record of 8-1 in the MAAC.

Fairfield’s Caram was named Tournament MVP and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Fairfield’s Johnson, MT Church, Betsy Nyman and Maron, Niagara’s Stephanie Gartley, Emily Montgomery and Jenna Sporta, Loyola’s Carolyn Kennington and Courtney Arikian, and Marist’s Liz Egan.

Congratulations!!! The Lady Stags should jump into the Northeast Region rankings. Niagara is ranked #10 in the Northeast Region and Loyola is ranked #8 in the Middle-Atlantic Region.

It's amazing how well both the men's and women's teams are doing. Maybe Fairfield can become the East Coast version of our Jesuit sister school, Santa Clara. Santa Clara is a national soccer powerhouse every year. Currently their women's team is ranked #7 in the U.S. and their men's team in ranked #6 in the U.S. Something to aim for!!!

Great win..... and what is really significant is that both Loyola and Niagara had very good teams.... a combined record of something like 30-8.

What is also pretty neat, is hardly any individual Stags were listed in the MAAC Stat leaders of any offensive category. Niagara and Loyola were loaded with offense, but we still prevailed. Great team effort.

Go Stags
