About 4 years ago when Stags were in a similar situation (Lost in MAAC Finals and were ranked top 25), they were in consideration for an At-large. So Season might not be over.

Possible, but, will be tough for the MAAC team to get an at-large bid.

Factors working for us...
1.)12 game streak without a loss
2.)Beat ranked NC State, but Wolfpack lost in ACC Quarters
3.)Tied Dartmouth and Yale, Ivy League Co-Champions
4.)1-0 Loss to Lafayette, Patriot League Champion (lukewarm)

Factor working against us...
1.) MAAC SOS
2.) No history of MAAC At-Large Bids
3.) 2-1 loss to Harvard who finished 5th in the Ivy League
4.) 1-0 loss to Elon who finished 3rd in the weak Southern Conference

Good analysis on +/- factors.

4 years ago, fans were able to email questions to the Selection Committee Chairman as part of an online chat session. I asked why Fairfield was not selected, even though they had a winning record against 2-3 teams from the Ivy that were selected. Her response was something like. "there were other factors besides head to head competition that went into the decision, but Fairfield was in consideration"

The MAAC is a decent Soccer league..... both Loyola and Marist have good reputations. Women's hoops got an At-large bid a few years ago, and MAAC Women's hoops is not as strong as MAAC Men's Soccer.

So there is hope.

Fairfield is ranked 86th
NC State is ranked 18th
Dartmouth is ranked 39th
Yale is ranked 50th
Lafayette is ranked 62th
FDU is ranked 67th

The MAAC only recently received an auto bid to the NCAAs when they expanded the tourney field. The years when Rider won back to back titles in the late 90s and were nationally ranked, they had to play a Play-In Game.

MAAC champ always receives a terrible seeding in the Tourney, therefore, FF stands no chance at an at-large.

Rider -- your logic is a little flawed in the play-in argument. The play-in's are decided prior to the season -- not like the MBB 64-65 game which is based on the worst 2 teams that get in as an auto bid... so when rider won back-to-back -- regardless of how good they were -- if they won the MAAC auto bid they HAD to be in the play-in by NCAA's rules...

Not to mention that the MAAC has had better success in the last years... i don;t know if it means fairfield is in - but they are 20th in the nation with some good wins, a great win streak that was snapped in the title game.

I guess my post wasn't clear enough...I said the same you you did. My point was that the MAAC did not receive an auto bid prior to the NCAA expanding the tournament field and since the auto bid, the seeds for the tournament champ have been horrible.

It is obvious that MAAC Soccer gets no respect on a national level. There is no way the Stags get an auto bid for the season they had. It was a nice season but you had to beat Marist on your home field to get to post-season.

first off -- FOX is from marist not the Stags... and you said that even when rider was ranked they had to play in the play-in game -- which doesnt exist now and cant be a comparision... i think the Stags are 50-50 -- depending on if the other leagues had big upsets... if all the big league favorites won -- then fairfield can get in -- if there was a rash of upsets in the big leagues their chances drop quickly.

also you have to remember marist took uconn to OT last uyear -- which the committee will remember...

I don't know what you don't understand...the PIG was a requirement for the MAAC in the late 90s. Had nothing to do with Rider's team....it just shows you that the MAAC is not regarded as a good soccer league.

The Stags stand NO CHANCE of an at-large soccer bid, they are not even on the bubble. They played a weak schedule have little to no quality wins and lost the championship game on their home field. No chance whatsoever.

Congrats to Marist, they'll be playing a powerhouse in the first round and will lose by 3-4 goals.

I was under the impression that there were only 32 teams in the NCAA field. Can someone verify this or provide an update on the size of the field allowed now. If only thirty-two teams, then it will be difficult for us to make the tourney, despite our #20 national ranking.

The NCAA site has FF ranked 24th, after today's home loss to Marist, FF is no longer ranked in the Top 25. FF stands no chance of an at-large berth.

[> at-large bids -- Shooter, 10:57:05pm 11/13/05 Sun, [1]

There's no need for anybody to be a jerk about it, but the reality is Fairfield won't get in. Last year Binghamton was in the exact same situation, ranked around 23rd, lost to Boston U. in the A-East tourney and didn't get a bid. In fact, their coach was kind enough to blame Marist for lowering his team's RPI and refused to schedule them anymore. Ass. I also seem to recall Hartwick was ranked around 15 in the last NSCAA poll (those people really dont know what they're doing anyway) and didn't get a bid.

The writing was on the wall for the MAAC in soccer last week, when the Loyola women's 16-4 record, with regular season losses only to undefeated #1 Penn State, SEC heavyweight Florida, and 2004 NCAA participant James Madison and a win over Conference USA regular season champ Central Florida, earned them absolutely nothing.

Because the best teams in men's soccer get first round byes under the 48-team format, a team like Marist has an excellent chance to do some damage in the first round, e.g. last year against a mediocre UConn team that only got in through going on a tear through the Big East tournament (similar to what West Virginia would later do in March).

Too bad there is no NIT for other sports, Fairfield would be a lock, IMO.

No bid for the Stags. Marist plays at St John's Saturday, winner plays Tuesday at Dartmouth.
